IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Monday, November 27, 2006

The Big Ten ended its season with a loss late Saturday, with Purdue falling at Hawaii, 42-35. The loss isn't anything for the 8-5 Boilermakers to be embarrassed about. Hawaii's nine-game winning streak is tied for third in the country, behind only Ohio State's 19-game streak and the 12-game run of WAC leader Boise State. The loss is generally more of a blotch on the conference, that a team that tied for fourth, at 5-3 with Penn State, can't handle the No. 2 team in the Western Athletic Conference.
In Jeff Sagarin's conference ratings, the Big Ten is fourth, behind the SEC, Big East and Pac-10. When considering individual teams in Sagarin's most broad individual rankings, the Big Ten lands five teams in the top 40, while the Pac-10 has nine, the SEC has seven, and the ACC and Big 12 also have five.
For all the respect Ohio State and Michigan have earned with the talk of a title game rematch, the rest of the Big Ten takes away from what the Buckeyes and Wolverines have done. If Ohio State finishes as a 13-0 national champ, it'll be time to consider the Buckeyes among the all-time greats. When that happens, the weak eight of the Big Ten are going to knock down Ohio State in the eyes of a lot of people.

It was inevitable that people would look at the Big 10's last OOC game and take it out of context.

Here's some context for you: Purdue did not play the two best teams in the conference. The conference record of their conference opponents was 24-40. Only 2 of the 8 conference teams they played were over .500.

So the 2nd best team in the WAC is 7 points better. How many people believe the 2nd best team in the Big 10 is only 7 points better than Purdue? TSUN would beat Purdue by 30.

Let's see how the Bowls play out before we draw any conclusions about relative conference strength.

Although I agree that the bowls are a better sign of conference strength, I'm not optimistic for the Big 10. I feel good about the Bucks and TSUN, but after those two, I don't see the Big 10 doing very well. Wisky? PSU? Purdue? Nah. They will be overmatched because they slid up a slot in the bowl selection due to OSU playing in the NC game. To be honest, I see the Big 10 finishing under .500 for the bowl games. Kind of like last year, they will start weak, and finish with a couple of powerful, high-profile victories (okay, so Penn State's wasn't a thing of beauty, but it still was a BCS win).

Let me add to what DBB said...keep in mind that Purdue had to travel 4,500 miles to play a game that their head coach was vehemently against, as near-20-point underdog, with a kickoff time after 11:00 pm EST (Purdue's time zone), against the most potent scoring offense in the country, after playing a complete Big Ten schedule, and still lost by only a TD late in the game. Anyone dissing the Big Ten because Purdue lost to Hawaii by only a TD late in the fourth quarter is flat out clueless.

Big Ten channel faces uphill battle with cable

By Marc Katz
Dayton Daily News

Friday, December 08, 2006
Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany spoke the truth the other day when he said, "The consumer gets what the consumer demands."
It remains to be seen if the consumer wants the Big Ten Network.
That's yet another new network not yet carried on area cable television.
Certainly it's a little early to worry. The network only this week named its first president (Mark Silverman, late of ABC Cable Networks) and will spend the days up to its August launch working on deals for carriers. Already, satellite carriers have signed on.
Sounds a lot like the NFL Network and ESPNU, doesn't it?
"We're not the NFL Network," said Delany and partner Bob Thompson, president of Fox Sports Networks.
After all, the NFL Network this season offered only eight live games. Cable companies complained that the compensation asked by the NFL Network was too much, and mostly passed. Cable said the NFL Network is just niche sports, and the public wouldn't want to pay more for that.
At the Big Ten, they think their 11 schools will have more compelling programming, including 35 football games (at least two a year involving each school) and 105 men's basketball games.
Forget the basketball games. There are hundreds of games on multiple networks throughout the season. And many of those football games aren't going to lure in extensive viewership, either. Let's be honest: If Northwestern and Indiana can't fill their stadiums, who's going to tune in and watch games involving those teams while Ohio State is playing Penn State on ABC?
That isn't to say there is no interest. But with the proliferation of sports on television, asking a cable company to buy one more network may be a tough sell, even in the Big Ten's eight-state footprint.
I like the idea, though. I like the idea there will be around-the-clock studio shows on Big Ten sports, and especially archival film of famous football games.
Here's hoping Time Warner feels the same way. Otherwise, you'll be watching a couple of Ohio State games at your local bar next year ? at least smoke-free. My guess is the Youngstown State game tops that list.

agree w/mililani completely...osu-west has developed into a pretty good team and they struggled to beat hawaii in an entertaining game so purdue didn't necessarily embarrass itself. i do think wisky and psu have excellent chances to win their games and although the b10 is obviously down at the bottom they may look ok during bowl season.

Drought conditions hit Midwest

February 4, 2007
BY TAYLOR BELL
What does it say when only 13 of the top 100 football players in the nation are committed to Big Ten schools? When, for the first time in memory, the conference isn't represented among the top 10 recruiting classes? ''It's a bad year for the Big Ten, the worst in my 28 years of evaluating high school talent,'' CSTV recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. ''I'm shocked that there may not be any Big Ten schools in the top 10 nationally for the first time.
''Every school says they are doing great. But I've never heard of only 13 players among the top 100 going to the Big Ten.''

Herbstreit just sounded like a complete espn tool, claiming that the Big 10 set itself back 10 years because of one recruiting season.

What a complete moron, it's sad to hear most of the stuff he spews anymore.
Actually he said that the Big 10 set the perception of itself back another ten years due to the piss poor showing from us and tsun. He's right. He said that the way people, outside of the conference, perceive us is as a slow, plodding conference. That was actually the way they saw us before the bowl season. Both teams not showing up to their games prepared helped feed the perception that we were slow, because we actually looked much slower than UF and USC. Nevermind that our athletes are just as good as UF's and USC's. The lack of preparation made everyone slow and plodding.

Herbie sounded like he was pissed at Carr and Tressel for feeding that perception, not that he said one recruiting class would screw us for ten years. Just that the BCS games screwed us this year, and that it set us back ten years in the way that people perceive Big Ten football.

I got a little angry when I responded.
Understandable. I still get pretty pissed everytime I think about that game. I'm guessing that Herbie is voicing his displeasure. I've heard several random comments from many different commentators, football and others, that have voiced displeasure over spouting for a month that us and tsun were definitely the top two teams and then getting embarrassed.

Maybe I'm alone in the wilderness on this but everytime I hear Herbstreit talk about Ohio State I assume its going to be negative. To put a little perspective on everything prior to the tOSU v. Florida game the Big Ten was 2-0 against the SEC somehow that kinda got forgotten in the mix. Buckeye fans trust me the sky is not falling.
