Big 10 Basketball 2009-2010

In early B10 games today Sparty being Sparty only leads IUPU-Ft Wayne by 7 at the half, KU putting the boots to scUM 15+ with 1minute to go in the 1st half.

I've given up on trying to figure out MSU this year.

Perhaps the story of the conference this season has been the play of Northwestern, who has rebounded from the loss of their star player to beat Stanford and move to 9-1 on the season, now with 4 wins over BCS conference teams - also beat ND, Iowa State and NC State, all three of those were away from home (2 at a neutral site). They still have two nonconference cupcakes left on their schedule - that's 11-1 in nonconference. All NU has to do is go 8-10 in the Big Ten and they're going to make the tournament this year, and they may well fare better than that. It's history in the making!

:shake: Illinois goes and loses to a bad Georgia team

mix that in with losses to Utah and Bradley

other than a miraculous comeback against Clemson and a decent win over Vanderbilt, the Illini have seemed mediocre at best

I think Illinois is playing quite a few freshmen this year so they will be up-and-down almost the entire season.

Just to think how good Northwestern could be if Coble had not had season ending injury. It will be interesting to see how they fare against the teams in the Big Ten who are accustomed to their style of play. It will be nice to see them make the NCAA tournament. It's too bad that Coble will not be able to share that experience.

I really don't think a Northwestern team that has gone 8-10 in conference play is going to make the NCAA tourney. 9-9: let's talk.

Penn State and NW are the two surprises of pre-conference play. But come back and see me in March when they've been beaten on by the likes of Michigan State, Wisconsin and Purdue. I think NIT is the likely destination for both these teams, though it would be cool to see NW in their first Big Dance.

Iowa gets a little thinner but props to whoever made this decision.
Iowa starting guard Anthony Tucker was suspended after Iowa City Police said he was arrested for public intoxication.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said that the 20-year-old Tucker, the team's second-leading scorer with 11.9 points per game, would be suspended indefinitely. Officials at the Johnson County Jail said Tucker pleaded not guilty to one count of public intoxication and was released Sunday on $325 bond.

The sophomore pleaded guilty to public intoxication in December 2008. In January, Tucker was ruled academically ineligible to play.

I'm confused. CBSSportsline says they're 25th in the AP, but the link to the AP poll shows them among the "others receiving votes," essentially at 29th.

Never mind. The bright boys at CBS updated the date under their poll listing, but they didn't update the actual poll. :roll1:

The poll on the website isn't updated yet. ESPiN has the most recent one posted.

Nice little write up with a snapshot of all the Big 10 teams with projected finishes. Writer thinks Ohio State will finish third tied with Wisconsin and Minnesota. As Michigan State winning the title and Purdue finishing second which I certainly did not agree with.
Men's basketball: Big Ten preview
Tuesday, December 29, 2009 3:09 AM
By Bob Baptist

Preseason reports of the Big Ten's re-emergence as a power conference in men's basketball might have been exaggerated.

It finally did win the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. But with eight nonconference games remaining and the conference season beginning tonight, the Big Ten ranks seventh among all conferences, and last among the six major conferences, in the Rating Percentage Index. It also is seventh -- and last among the majors -- in the strength of the nonconference schedules its members have played.
"I think our league has done a good job. I wouldn't say a great job," said Purdue coach Matt Painter, whose team is the only one in the Big Ten without a loss. "I think there are games a couple teams would like to have back."
How good the Big Ten is, though, is talk for another day -- like in March, when teams are campaigning for NCAA Tournament bids.

For now, the focus should be on what Ohio State coach Thad Matta predicts will be "similar to last year -- an all-out war for two months."

OHIO STATE
Coach: Thad Matta (sixth season)
Record: 10-2
Best win: 76-70 vs. California in New York
Worst loss: 77-73 vs. North Carolina in New York
Go-to guys: Evan Turner (18.5 ppg, 11.4 rpg, 5.9 apg), David Lighty (14.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg), William Buford (12.6 ppg), Jon Diebler (14.4 ppg, .483 three-point percentage)
Big Ten opener: Thursday at Wisconsin
Bottom line: How soon can Turner return?
