Big 10 Basketball 2009-2010

(link)

Loser: East Coast basketball. Yeah, we all know what a bust the Big East was during the first weekend -- six of eight teams out and five of them beaten by lower seeds. But save some scorn for the Atlantic-10, which saw Richmond and Temple both lose to lower-seeded teams. Only Xavier remains to carry the A-10 banner.

Winner: Big Ten. I'm not sure anyone out there expected this league to have more Sweet 16 teams than the Big East or the Big 12, but it has happened. Proof positive that the top of this league was very good -- just don't mention the bottom. Three Big Ten teams are still alive, even if two of them (Purdue and Michigan State) are limping thanks to key injuries at precisely the wrong time. The Boilermakers deserve special commendation for being here after a season-ending injury to Robbie Hummel a couple of weeks before the tournament started.

Did any team crumble at the end of the season this year like Wisconsin did? I think a lot of people assumed they were primed to make a run in the BTT and the NCAA tournament with Leuer back, yet they totally fell apart, getting bounced in their first game of the BTT and then getting absolutely housed by an Ivy League team in the second round of the NCAAs.

True, but Nova lost what, 4 of 6 going into the tourney? And they were handed the game against Robert Morris by the officials. Add to that the fact that Cornell was shooting like 80% (sarcasm) and I'd say 12 beating a 4 isn't as bad as a 10 beating a 2.

I mean, Nova had no business being a 2 seed at all, and maybe Wisky shouldn't have been a 4...hindsight is 20/20.

Either way, everyone has to be happy with the B10 effort so far, those of us who watch the conference consistently knew that it was tougher than advertised.

Nova had lost 5 of 7 entering the tourney IIRC. However, there were a lot of "experts" on ESPN picking Nova to make the Final Four. No one (outside of Bo Ryan and his used car dealership) picked the Badgers to do that.

Unless something unusual happens like OSU winning the NC, I think this will be a "what could have been" year for the Big Ten with Lucas and Hummel having poorly timed injuries along with the Coble injury and the off-court issues for Minnesota that cost them three of their most talented players. While the league did OK in getting a few teams to the S16, they could've and should've done significantly more had teams lived up to expectations and/or not had injuries.
