Football: The Ohio State University has just announced that Bowling Green has been added to the 2006 football schedule.
“We feel fortunate to be able to add a team like Bowling Green,” said Gene Smith, Ohio State’s Director of Athletics. “When the NCAA approved a 12th game, our goal was to get another home game and to try to schedule a good in-state team in an effort to keep our education dollars in Ohio. Bowling Green fit that scenario perfectly.”
The game will be played October 7, 2006 in Ohio Stadium.

So next year's 12-game schedule now looks like this:

2006
Northern Illinois (9/2)
at Texas (9/9)
Cincinnati (9/16)
Penn State (9/23)
at Iowa (9/30)
Bowling Green (10/7)
at Michigan State (10/14)
Indiana (10/21)
Minnesota (10/28)
at Illinois (11/4)
at Northwestern (11/11)
Michigan (11/18)

How was I supposed to remember something posted in the Rumor Mill four weeks ago? Just because I posted it!

I can never find that future schedules link.

BG, Ohio State to play in 2006

Bowling Green State University will play Ohio State in football next season on Oct. 7, individuals close to the scheduling process confirmed yesterday. It will be the Falcons’ fourth visit to Ohio Stadium since 1992.

With schedules expanding to 12 games, an open date existed for the Buckeyes. BG already has games with Wisconsin (at Cleveland) and at home against Boise State next year.

Not that I advocate scheduling D1AA patsies like Sam Houston State a la Texas Tech, but one of these days scheduling a bunch of MAC schools (particularly the good ones) will come back and bite us in the ass. We certainly don't need to be doing it twice in the same year. Weren't some bad BCS conference teams like Kentucky, Missouri or Pitt available? :wink2:

And after all that stink about "extending" the season by going to a 12th game, all they did was take away the kids' bye week. Would it really kill the Big-10 schools to extend the season a week and play into mid/late November?

No bye week- not sure what to think about that. I am happy as a fan to have 12 straight weeks of Buckeye football but wonder if it will hurt the team. Tress commented on how much he thinks the bye week helped the Bucks this year.

Matt Hayes from tSN speculated a few months ago that the open date would be filled by Miami (FL). Guess that one didn't pan out ..

Anyone know who the other top teams filled their open dates with?
matt hayes didn't do much research. We have a series coming up in like 5 years with them, no need to do a random 1 game series now.

Why are they throwing BG in after we play 2 Big Ten teams?? Not too big of a fan of that.

My thoughts exactly. I'd rather get the non-conference games all out of the way before starting the conference games. It seems that there's a different mindset and focus when playing conference games as opposed to non-conference games, and therefore a letdown is possible. Does anyone know the last time we had a non-conference game in the middle of the conference season? 2001 comes to mind, but I could be wrong.
