Best Sandwich in the Country

Sheesh, you all must have a different idea about sandwiches than I do. You seem to view sandwiches as cuisine, where I see them as food. Given that, give me a sack of White Castle cheeseburgers and I'm happy as a pig in shit.
I'm with you. They're called Krystals down here and I put away a dozen the other night. Felt like hell the next day, though.

Down here we call them po'boys.

Usually involves some sort of fried seafood on french bread with lettuce, tomato and mayo. We do not limit ourselves to just that though.

My favorite shop was street car sandwiches, which got closed down every couple of years for tax evasion.

We also had a local barbecue place that if you knew the owner he would serve you vension sausage with red gravy. Man I miss that place.

Not sure who's the parent company, but my understanding is that they're the same thing. They'll both do a pretty good job of clogging your arteries. I used to hit the Clintonville White Castle next to Patrick J's on High Street once a week or so.

Cheif-O is quick, and dirt cheap... five bucks and you walk out stuffed!!! If you like cheap greasy-spon type places you'll like the chef-o-nette. (don't go during peak hours our you will have to wait for a seat behind every blue haired UA senior in town :tongue2: (the MCL cafe. type of customer that frequents the cheif-o).

I remember going there in the mornings and buying candy before school when I went to Tremont Elementry (the school across the street)... no way their food is in a "best" category, but good for the price IMO...

In Columbus, Claddagh's at Polaris has the best Monte Cristo I've ever had. IMO it's the best sandwich in town.

Back in SoCal, there's this burger place called "Burgers and Beer" in El Centro (Imperial County, over an hour east of San Diego) that has this thing called a Pancho Burger which was easily worth the drive out from SD. They also had a seriously lovely senorita working there who easily ranks in the top five most beautiful women I've ever spoken to (three of the top 5 were gals at tOSU, btw ).

I would have to go with a "special K" at Slymans, located at E32nd and St Clair in Cleveland. It is a huge rueben with no kraut. Not only is the sandwich excelent but latrge enough to make three sandwichs with the corn beef.

Best sandwiches

1-gyro at Skipper's in Oxford, Ohio
2-my ex-bosses Reuben at the Best Cafe, Lebanon-he used sweet kraut instead of sour
3-the patty melt at The Breakfast Club on Main St. in Dayton

As far as subs go, my dad taught me an important lesson-if you can get good meats cheeses, and buns at your local grocery/deli, you can make a way better sub yourself than any shop........

Just curious-I have no idea what a Monte Cristo is.

I just thought of another- the rueben at Corky and Lenny's in Cleveland (actually an eastern 'burb, but I forget which one.). I think they're closed now, but that was an awesome sandwich. Traditional Jewish deli- Yum!

It's ham and swiss stacked with about 4 slices of bread, topped with a little brown mustard, then dipped in a mixture of eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and any other spices your heart desires, then fried in a pan with some olive oil until golden brown. Triple bypass not included...
