Best Games Coming This Fall

Yeah, I'm all in on Texas Arrogance. They win, and they go away. Domers win and start making a run at the playoffs, and the fucking subways crawl out of their closet, particularly with the Bears expected to be another clusterfuck. In the immortal words of Douglas C. Niedermeyer ('63/KIA), "let's end this now."

"And most recently of all, a "Roman Toga Party" was held from which we have received more than two dozen reports of individual acts of perversion SO profound and disgusting that decorum prohibits listing them here." - COL Niedermeyer

L'ville has a pulse at least. Remember Petrino at Arky? They could score points. Given this is the first game of the year, what if the Cards are really good offensively, and Auburn doesn't have their [Mark May] together? That's the why. It's not Auburn vs. a directional school, but you do have a point if L'ville is meh and Auburn is really good.

Didn't the Honey Badger play for LSU?

Texas and ND is interesting because both are blue bloods, and Strong had L'ville high in the rankings. You would think it's only a matter of time before he gets Texas there (although I'm not totally sure he is a great fit at Texas). While not Urban, Charlie is a disciple, and if he installs a similar program at UT, and they utilize the talent that is there, this might be the year where they re-emerge. It all has to do with QB play. It has to get much better. If it does, Texas can beat ND. ND is expected to be a national contender. It would be great to see those expectations take a major blow right out of the gate. Better believe I'll be watching this one - at least until ND is ahead 3 scores in the 4th qtr. :)

Is this for real? I mean outside the obligatory ranking and hype they get every year just for having shiny helmets... after the way they finished 2014... hard to take that seriously right now?

I'm confidant that Strong will have Texas turned around eventually, but it'll all depend on if the administration gives him the necessary time to accomplish that. They're probably another year away still from getting there, but I expect they'll come fired up into South Bend for that first game and make it a contest unless their QB play hasn't improved at all. Defensively ND should be improved from where they were at the end of the season since they won't be working with a bunch of 2nd stringers on a banged up unit, but there's questions whether the starters can provide an adequate pass rush. Offensively they should be ready to roll, Golson is gone, but I like what Zaire brings to the table and I'm hoping they decide to run the ball more instead of trying to throw 35-40 times a game. The biggest question will be what would happen if Zaire would get injured. Deshone Kizer isn't quite ready for the big time based on the Spring game, and the only other scholarship quarterback will be Brandon Wimbush who is coming in with a lot of hype but will just be a freshman.

I bought a new preview mag yesterday - Lindy's. He has this game as one of his top 10 OOC games. Yeah, sometimes there is a tendency to value names over substance. I seriously doubt that Texas or ND will be in front of the CFBPC at the end, but because they are Texas and ND they will if they have a good season. At this point, are you sure neither of them will be worth anything? I'm not. I do think the ceiling for Texas is higher than that for ND - and the future brighter.

They way they finished 2014 wasn't a great bearing on where the team currently is. There's been a ridiculous number of injuries on the defensive side of the ball the last two years and it's led to late season slumps because of various depth issues in the roster at the time. Golson's turnovers didn't help the situation either. Golson is gone, and maybe some of his production leaves with him, but Zaire had a great showing against LSU as the Irish got a few defenders back for the bowl and they were able to hold on just long enough against a mediocre Tiger offense to secure a victory.

Offensively the Irish should do well this season against a schedule that is more manageable than some past seasons. Defensively if they remain healthy they've got Kevarie Russell coming back after being out a year from the Frozen Five issue last season. If Russell doesn't miss a beat, he should be one of the better corners in the country. ND hasn't really had someone I would call a lock down corner for some time, Russell is probably the best the Irish have had in a decade or more. His stats were meager in 2013, but a lot of that had to do with the fact opposing teams quit throwing to his side all together. NDs secondary should be much improved this season, and the linebacker group will be bolstered by Jaylon Smith and a healthy Joe Schmidt. The biggest question mark remains on the DL where the Irish have struggled to generate a consistent pass rush despite shuffling various players in. They brought in Keith Gilmore from North Carolina as the new DL coach in the off season and moved Mike Elston to OLB Coach, so I'm hoping Gilmore can help spark a better pass rush for next year. More than anything, aside from the problems with injuries, this was a young team last year that should be improved as there's a lot more experience on the field.

That said, I don't expect the Irish to make it through the regular season undefeated. USC will likely be a loss. Clemson will be an away game and could be challenging. Georgia Tech will come to South Bend early bringing the Triple Option and Paul Johnson has had success against the Irish when he was at Navy. I expect 1-2 losses at least in the regular season.

Yea I don't know if taking the "we had injuries" thing carries much weight with an Ohio State fan and Cleveland native at this juncture.
Notre Dame looked like hot garbage finishing the year 2-5, including losing to Northwestern. Where were they ranked at the start of that slide? #5.... and who had they defeated up to that point? Rice, scUM, Purdont, Syracuse, Stanford, and UNC.

Only 1 of those teams finished with a winning record.

I'm about as sure as I can be of anything in preseason football... which isn't very. But I'd rank them up there with the likes of Rutgers at this point. The only real difference right now is curb appeal.
I have a feeling ND's blurbs for these silly useless preseason rankings from 2013 and 2014 should be pretty good comedy.
2013: Golson is back! NC HERE WE COME!
2014: We got rid of Golson! NC HERE WE COME!

"We had injuries" and getting completely decimated by injuries are two different things. Losing two quarterbacks is incredibly tough and 99% of the teams in the country would have folded at that point, but fortunately Cardale was an absolute beast at the end of the season and came up big. However, for a team like ND that struggled for a few years to build depth defensively and was consistently below the 85 scholarship limit injuries aside, the several injuries that occurred between the middle and later half of the season really took their toll. At one point we did the numbers and found there were less than 69 active and healthy (Capable of getting on the field) players in the final weeks of the season which didn't include the normal bumps and bruises that players are accustomed to playing through. Between the 5 suspensions and injuries we were missing both starting CBs at one point, 3 out of 4 starting DL, Joe Schmidt at ILB who was one of the leading tacklers and essentially the QB of the defense, and either Redfield or Shumate missed some games at Safety at the end. There were a number of major injuries in the 2nd string as well, at one point they had to throw some freshmen in at DL who otherwise would have been redshirted. I know a lot of fans can use the "injuries" excuse on why a team would collapse late in the season, but I've honestly never seen so many guys get taken out from one unit. Offensively there really weren't any major injuries for the Irish, Christian Lombard had back problems but they left him in throughout the season as he was able to play through it most games until LSU.

Couple articles I just googled regarding the injuries:
