No idea, but it must be based partly on user ratings (you can rate them if you click on the names). You can also recommend places on the top of that page.

I've been to one other on that list. Vesuvio in San Fran. That's where Kerouac and other beatniks used to hang out.

Well I never remember the names of bars I've been to around the country....but if I were to recommend a really good bar that I go to in Columbus, it would be "Bodega" on High Street. If you like your beers, they have over 50 beers ON TAP alone....the best selection for any bar in Columbus IMO!

Seems to me... that by definition... if these were the bast bars in America... I wouldn't remember ever being there.

Yet, I do have recollection of being in a few of these places.

Odd.

Im not so sure on the NYC list - its pretty weird. 21 Club and Bill's Gay 90s are both cool old restaurants (Bill's Gay is not actually Gay, but it is from the 1890's), but I wouldn't call them Bars... if you're an out-of-towner in the City, Zagat is still a good guide if you don't have someone local to show you around.

NO idea how Minetta tavern made anyone's top-rated list. It's not bad... but it's anything but remarkable.

The Charlotte list is very telling  FWIW Thomas Street is a good place

Bodega is damn impressive and probably the best deal in Columbus, too. Went there for the first time the weekend of the spring game. It's on 3rd and High in Short North. They have really good sandwiches and their happy hour is half-off for a pint of any draft beer (yes, any of their 50+) AND appetizers. We had 10 people in our group, average 3-4 drinks each and the tab ending up being $60.

Fucking snobs. You know what the best bar is? The one that serves your favorite beer on tap and cold for a fair price. A bar is made great by the quality of people that go there. Get a bunch of douchebags, it's a shitty bar, no matter who used to hang out there or how much cool shit they have on the walls. Hot bartenders? I'd rather them be ugly. That way, when I get trashed and want to bang her, she will be cool with it. She will also give me free drinks.
