Best Albums of 2010 (so far)

Upon first listen, Together by The New Pornographers is pretty good. It's definitely better than their last disc. It doesn't quite reach the heights of Mass Romantic or Twin Cinema, but it's more consistently listenable than perhaps any album of theirs since their aforementioned debut. I can usually count on any of Dan Bejar's contributions to the album killing all of the momentum and pretty much causing me to hit the skip button every time. That still holds for this one, but his songs don't bother me as much this time. "Your Hands (Together)" is a definite highlight, and being the one song I've allowed myself to listen to before today, it has been in heavy rotation. There are a handful of other songs that live up to its standard. The song that caught me most by surprise though was "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk". Kathryn Calder takes a turn as the lead vocalist (she usually gets second billing to Neko Case as the female vocalist) and understates the melody in a way that Case probably would not have. It's something I've never really heard this band do before, and the song benefits from it.

Apparently Will Sheff (Okkervil River) Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Zach Condon (Beirut) all make guest appearances on this album, but to be honest I didn't even notice them beyond their listing in the liner notes.

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms is a really good album. I cannot stop listening to High Violet however.

Still waiting to hear that...taking the jlb approach on that one.

Anyone listen to Diamond Eyes by Deftones yet?

Yes, the new Deftones album is really good...more in line with White Pony than their self titled and Saturday Night Wrist. THere's some really good stuff on Diamond Eyes. If you like the Deftones (especially White Pony), I would definitely recommend check it out.

Crystal Castles - "II" is excellent...but you have to be in the mood for it. Think electronic sex with some gothy chic.
Shout Out Louds - "Work" was good but not what I was hoping for.
The Radio Dept. - "Clinging to a Scheme" was fair and will be played in every trendy store across the globe but just missed by a bit.
Geographer - "Animal Shapes" is quite good but a lot of the songs sound the same. Either way, fun to listen to.

High Violet by The National is everything I was expecting. If you don't own it, buy it. If you don't have their last three albums, get those too. And when you do buy them, be sure to do so at your local independent record store. I've only been able to listen once so far because I wasted my time tonight on the fucking Cavs, but that one listen was good. It seems like an album that will reward patient listening, much like The Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night. I anticipate that by the end of the year I'll be having a hard time choosing between these two for my favorite album of 2010.

This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem is mercifully the last the the releases I've been very highly anticipating this month. I swear, I should've just had my paycheck for the month of May direct deposited with Shake It Records.

Most of the reviews I had read of this one pointed to this album being heavily influenced by David Bowie and Talking Heads. Having listened a couple times now, I definitely hear those same things. I've never really been much of a Bowie fan, and even less of a Talking Head fan. As an album, I'm not liking it as much as I hoped right off the bat. I think that by the end of the year I'll either not like the album as a whole all that much, or I'll be into Bowie and Talking Heads and will consider this album to have been my entry point.

Three songs in particular though immediately grabbed me, and I consider them to be among James Murphy's best work ("Dance Yrself Clean", "All I Want" and "Home"). "Pow Pow" however most represents the feel of this record for me. When I hear that song, I hear "Losing My Edge" with the punk dialed down and the disco dialed up. I think that's how it is throughout this album - the rock influences seem diminished, and while I might come around to that, it's something that I miss for the moment.

Really liking Diamond Eyes by Deftones and OMNI by Minus the Bear. I have an MP3 CD in my car with those two albums on it as well as American Ghetto by Portugal. The Man, High Violet by The National, Trans-Continental Hustle by Gogol Bordello, Sea of Cowards by The Dead Weather, Infinite Arms by Band of Horses, Broken Bells self-titled album and Brothers by The Black Keys...all of which are 2010 releases.
