Injuries leave offense lacking synchronicity
Starting receivers have rarely practiced
Saturday, August 23, 2008 3:04 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals practiced without Chad Johnson or T.J. Houshmandzadeh yesterday. It was the 39th time in 40 practices that one or both of the Pro Bowl receivers was absent, dating to the 12 voluntary offseason practices that both skipped.
The only time this summer they both participated in practice was the fifth and final workout of minicamp, and it might be the only time they take the field together before the season opener Sept. 7. Running back Rudi Johnson also has missed much of training camp because of a hamstring injury, and tackles Willie Anderson and Levi Jones have been given occasional days off to rest their legs.

Saints 13 | Bengals 0
First-string offense hears it from the fans
Palmer, company fail to move ball in first half vs. Saints

By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Two signs of protest, each critical of Bengals owner Mike Brown, were hung inside Paul Brown Stadium last night. Security guards pulled them down before the team's offense gained a yard.
The sounds of protest are not so easily removed, so the boos rained freely by the middle of the second quarter.
The Bengals lost to the New Orleans Saints 13-0, as the first-string offense again could not move the ball consistently and the first-string defense again generated virtually no pass rush. Quarterback Carson Palmer walked into the locker room just before halftime with blood pouring from his nose and mouth. When his teammates followed moments later, the jeers returned with a passion.
The exits were crowded in the third quarter. Those fans who wanted to beat the traffic remained in their seats until the final whistle. A frustrating offseason and discouraging preseason have sapped much of the optimism that the salary-capped, revenue-sharing NFL usually provides.

Houshmandzadeh (hamstring), wide receiver Chad Johnson (shoulder), wide receiver Andre Caldwell (foot), tight end Matt Sherry (unknown), defensive tackle Pat Sims (toe), linebacker Rashad Jeanty (knee) and defensive end Antwan Odom (foot).

Palmer leaves game in first half with bloody nose, cut lip

CINCINNATI -- Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer got roughed up again during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night, leaving late in the first half with a bloody nose and a cut lip.

Palmer was sacked three times in the first half, the last on a safety blitz by Kevin Kaesviharn with 2 seconds left. He walked off the field with blood spilling down the front of his face, then headed to the locker room with a towel covering his head. He didn't return for the second half.

Palmer got knocked to the ground five times during a 27-10 loss to Detroit a week earlier.

A battered and bloodied Carson Palmer leaves the field Saturday night with a broken nose. He is questionable for the Bengals' preseason finale Thursday in Indianapolis.

CINCINNATI -- Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer had his broken nose re-set yesterday, and he is questionable for the team's final preseason game Thursday in Indianapolis. He is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Palmer suffered the broken nose late in the second quarter Saturday in what would be a 13-0 loss to New Orleans. He was leveled by safety Kevin Kaesviharn and end Bobby McCray for the Saints' third sack of the game, equaling in two quarters the number of sacks the Bengals allowed in the final six games last season.
"To see Carson get hit, it really hurts me deeply," guard Bobbie Williams said after the game. "We have to correct that, point blank. ... We absolutely cannot let Carson get hit like that."

Trip to hall of fame gives rookies a history lesson

CANTON -- The Bengals have become achingly familiar with busts, the kind involving draft day (see Akili Smith) and the police (Chris Henry).
But the ones admired by rookie offensive lineman Anthony Collins on a May 31 visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame were viewed in a more positive light.
Collins and fellow Bengals rookies walked through the enshrinement gallery studying the bronzed busts of football greats and gaining a greater appreciation for the game's history.
"I wanted to see all the (offensive) linemen," said Collins, a fourth-round draft pick. "And the one person who stood out played for this team and that's Anthony Munoz. (Being inducted) was a big accomplishment, and basically I'm trying to follow in his footsteps."
Connecting current players to the league's past is one reason NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made all franchises send their rookies to the hall this spring as part of an orientation program.

Bengals: Palmer is out for finale, two others could return

By Scott Priestle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Quarterback Carson Palmer will not be in uniform Thursday for the Bengals' final exhibition game, but receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and running back Rudi Johnson are expected to play, if only briefly.
Palmer suffered a broken nose Saturday. He said he could play through the injury, but the plan all along was to not play in the finale.
Houshmandzadeh and Johnson, who have been slowed by hamstring injuries, practiced the past two days and should play against Indianapolis. Ditto for linebacker Rashad

Rudi Johnson set to hear bad news
Bengals running back won't be surprised if he's dealt or cut
Thursday, August 28, 2008 3:14 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Coach Marvin Lewis has said in recent weeks that Chris Perry would be the Bengals' No. 1 running back if the season began today. Of course, the season does not begin today, so it was easy for longtime starter Rudi Johnson to take those comments in stride.
Then Johnson returned to practice this week after having missed most of the preseason because of a hamstring injury, and he split carries with Perry. And ESPN reported that the Bengals would like to trade Johnson for a receiver who can help the ailing passing game.
If Lewis' words were not clear enough, hearing his name in a trade rumor resonated with Johnson.
"It's always something every year," he said. "They've been trying to get me out of here for a long time now."

The Cincinnati Bengals almost certainly will look for receivers on the waiver wire this weekend, when NFL teams cut down to 53 players. Ideally, they will find a receiver capable of returning kicks.
Rookie Jerome Simpson has made a push for playing time the past two weeks, and his roster spot is guaranteed, but the Bengals don't seem ready to make him the No. 3 receiver. Veterans Glenn Holt and Antonio Chatman are in danger of being cut, because they have done little of note as receivers or kick returners.

Bengals 27, Colts 7: Fitzpatrick fuels winning effort
Backup quarterback's play draws praise from Lewis

Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, diving for extra yardage, ran for 35 yards on the opening drive and converted three third-down plays with his feet.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick joined the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of training camp last year, too late to play in an exhibition game, which meant he was too late to be noticed. The regular season belongs to Carson Palmer, even in practice.
"It's not the conventional quarterback situation, where if you have a 10-play period the backup guy is going to get four or three (plays)," coach Marvin Lewis said. "This guy is going to maybe squeeze two during a period, the way Carson likes to take the reps."
Fitzpatrick finally got a chance to show off this summer, and he has looked better than any of Palmer's backups since Jon Kitna. Given a chance to start last night while Palmer recovers from a broken nose, Fitzpatrick led the Bengals to two early touchdowns in a 27-7 win over the Colts.

Bengals
Roster cuts, budget cuts
Waiving Anderson, Rudi Johnson, O'Neal will save team $9.2 million

Veteran offensive tackle and team leader Willie Anderson was one of the high-profile players cut by the Bengals.

CINCINNATI -- The Bengals saved more than $9 million yesterday but might have gambled something more valuable than salary-cap space: leadership, depth and good will.
The team released veteran offensive tackle Willie Anderson, perhaps the most popular player among teammates; running back Rudi Johnson, once one of the stars of a high-powered offense; and former Pro Bowl cornerback Deltha O'Neal. The trio would have made a combined $9.2 million to be backups, and each was slowed in recent weeks by injuries.
