Henry has been quiet off, on field
Saturday, December 23, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI ? Chris Henry has gone since June without being arrested. For most people, that?s hardly a noteworthy achievement. But it?s worth pointing out for a guy arrested four times in the past six months.
Now if only Henry would resume making noise on the field. The Bengals receiver has always been able to offset his off-field problems by being a dynamic, reliable player. Blessed with a rare combination of size, speed and hands, Henry is a matchup nightmare for opponents as a third receiver.

Time to clear the air
Playing a mile high won't affect 'many'

BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

Carson Palmer lived in Colorado as a youngster, moved away and returned years later with Southern Cal's football team.
The thin mountain air wasn't an issue then - the Trojans scored a 37-point win against the University of Colorado in Boulder during Palmer's senior season - and the Bengals quarterback doesn't anticipate it being one Sunday afternoon at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
"I think it kind of gets overhyped, overstated, and you expect more than what it really is," Palmer said. "We'll be in great shape and be prepared to play this game like any other game."

Wins becoming a must for Bengals
With both teams at 8-6, Cincinnati and Denver gear up for playoff push
Sunday, December 24, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It doesn?t seem to matter when the game is played or who the opponent is. NFL players and coaches act as if they?ll be banished from the league if they talk about any game as anything less than a sort of death struggle.
In a 16-game season, it?s true that every week is important for teams fighting for the playoffs. But only now have the Bengals arrived at the part of the schedule when classifying a game as a must win doesn?t cause eyeballs to roll. Cincinnati can still make the playoffs if it doesn?t beat Denver today, and a victory over the host Broncos by itself won?t guarantee the Bengals a postseason spot.

Canton

DENVER (AP) - Rod Smith credited the weather. John Lynch claimed there was an element of luck involved. Mike Shanahan simply pointed to something more spiritual.

A botched extra point on a snowy Sunday sealed Denver's 24-23 win over Cincinnati, preventing the Bengals from clinching a playoff berth and putting the Broncos in the driver's seat for a wild-card spot.
Brad St. Louis' long snap on an extra point in the final minute sailed wide of holder Kyle Larson, keeping Shayne Graham from even attempting his 159th straight conversion.

BRONCOS 24 BENGALS 23
Botched ending
Missed extra point, penalty on onside kick complete costly loss
Monday, December 25, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DENVER ? The extra-point kick is the most routine play in football, nearly automatic for NFL teams.
But nothing is routine for the Cincinnati Bengals. Not yesterday. Not this season.
So as stunning as it was that Brad St. Louis? snap fluttered wide and through the hands of holder Kyle Larson, it was simply the exclamation point on a day in which the Bengals were their own worst enemies. The botched extra-point attempt, which came following a 90-yard touchdown drive ending with 41 seconds left, proved to be the difference in the Bengals? 24-23 loss to the Denver Broncos in Invesco Field at Mile High.

Palmer doesn?t blame shaky day on shoulder
Monday, December 25, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DENVER ? Carson Palmer said his shoulder felt fine.
"I felt great," the Bengals quarterback said. "I didn?t play great."
Forced to answer questions this week about a sore shoulder suffered in Monday night?s loss to Indianapolis, Palmer didn?t necessarily put the issue to rest with his performance for most of Cincinnati?s 24-23 loss to Denver yesterday. Palmer threw with his normal velocity but not with his accustomed accuracy. He missed Chris Henry and Chad Johnson on deep balls when the receivers had gotten behind the coverage.

Win doesn?t guarantee spot; Bengals need help
Tuesday, December 26, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DENVER ? A bad Monday followed a bad Sunday for the Bengals.
The New York Jets? victory over Miami last night dealt a major blow to Cincinnati?s playoff chances.
Cincinnati must beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday and then hope one of two unlikely scenarios unfolds. Scenario No. 1: The Oakland Raiders (2-13) beat the host New York Jets.

Bengals want to keep focus on Steelers, not playoffs
Thursday, December 28, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI ? The Bengals? pulse is still detectable, but the post-mortems have already begun. Cincinnati (8-7) remains alive in the playoff picture. The Bengals, however, do not have complete control of their destiny. Cincinnati must beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, which it hasn?t done in Paul Brown Stadium in their past five meetings, to have any chance. In addition, the Bengals must hope the Oakland Raiders upset the New York Jets or San Francisco wins in Denver while Kansas City defeats Jacksonville.

Leg injury ends Braham?s career
Thursday, December 28, 2006
Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI ? Center Rich Braham, whose 2006 season was limited to two games because of a leg fracture, announced his retirement yesterday. "It gets to a point: Do you want to walk someday?" said Braham, a 13-year veteran who started 142 games for the Bengals. "You can play with one bad knee. This injury, it?s going to be tough to come back from. It?s something the doctors couldn?t tell if it?s going to heal in a week or a year. So what do you do? Sometimes, if it?s your time, it?s your time."

Ghiaciuc ready to be next in line at center; Retiring Braham set example for second-year player
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]
Bengals center Rich Braham was asked to serve as a mentor to Eric Ghiaciuc, and by obliging he aided the development of his possible offensive line successor.
"He's been a real valuable asset to me as a rookie and as a young guy," said Ghiaciuc, who is in his second NFL season.
