Bengals claim Krenzel

6-20-05, 5:45 p.m.
The Bengals today acquired QB Craig Krenzel on waivers from the Chicago Bears. Krenzel (6-4, 228; Ohio State) was the second of the Bears’ two fifth-round draft picks in 2004. He played in six games as a rookie with five starts, completing 59 of 127 passes for 718 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions.

I'd say Craig has a good shot at sticking at #3, although I've read Bramlet was impressive in NFL Europe. Best of luck Craig! Even if it is with the Bengals.
Heck, he could even be the Bengal's #2 quarterback. Considering that:

1) This is Carson Palmer's team.
2) The Bengals (with Mike Brown) has always been and continues to be "cheap".
3) Kitna made more than Palmer in 2004. See USA Today:
http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/teamdetail.aspx?team=7&year=2004
4) Kitna won't be happy as a backup.
5) It wouldn't surprise me to see the Bengals trade Kitna; or just cut him to save $$$s, etc.

Krenzel is a warm body to take snaps in training camp. As much as I would love him to stick around, he stands zero chance to make the Bengals considering the Bengal brass is high on Bramlet to unseat Kitna next season as Palmer's back up.

Well hell, I'm going all with the upside on this deal.

First, its good for Krenzel, he gets a chance at being #2 or #3.

Second its good for the Bengals, they get a chance at having Krenzel in that #3 or better spot. (as others mentioned, de Brown family may look at this as dollars and sense).

Third, (horn tooting), I suggested back when he was cut by Da Bears that the Bengals might be a logical safe haven for Craig's services.

Overall, I reckon this is Craig's best chance to show what he can do. If the Kitna dump scenario plays out there is a practically certain chance that for at least one week in the season the Bengals will need the services of a tried back-up. The Bengals O-line last year, and this one coming, is better than the mesh-vest he worked behind in Chicago last year. Get Craig's timing to speed up and he could carry a team when needed. Frankly, based on his record in Chicago he could do more.

No way he replaces the franchise golden boy, but a smart young man like Krenzel can make a lot of hay working in the background. Plus, maybe he works the whole thing like John Frank did in SF, keep his hand in on both the medical and sports fronts -- keeping his options not merely open, but fully active. There are some pretty well respected Sports Medicine practioners in the area .. the possibilities are all there should he want to take full advantage of the situation.

I found this interesting...

That probably didn’t help Krenzel since word is the Bears weren’t happy that he didn’t act on their suggestion to play in Europe. But Krenzel has a lot of balls in the air. Here’s a guy who majored in Molecular Genetics and plans to go to medical school.

I guess he really must be thinking about med school since he really would have gone to Europe otherwise...

krenzel would have a better chance sticking in the nfl if he would've signed on w/ that "other" ohio team. I don't see kitna or bramlet going anywhere, not to mention haldi has supposedly looked good.

Kitna made the fourth most as a Bengal as a BACKUP. Jesus.

I think Krenzel is pretty much done for. He got more snaps than I thought he would in his whole career as a Bear. And the reason behind his starts was the starters were injured, not that he climbed the ranks. Even if they release Kitna (who I think should have started last year), Bramlet will most likely get the #2 spot due to his performance in NFL Europe.
