So I watched the trailer. Has a "Cloverfield" feel to it...but I'm not sure I'll pay to see it in theaters.

Being entirely serious for a moment:

On the Alpha Piper fire structural members did in fact begin to melt from the heat of the fire BUT they were also exposed to a much larger fuel source.

Regarding high rise buildings, melted steel & catastrophic failure...

Blacksmiths work at temperatures far lower than required for steel to melt:

The barstock in the video is 1k (F) lower than the melting point of steel.

Drop it down 300 degrees and you're at cherry red which still leaves a product that is ductile enough for a smith to work easily by hand.

....which is irrelevant because the forensic evidence showed that interior temperatures reached 1.8K (F) which puts us back into the range of the video.

If a theory requires that everyone associated with an event is lying...then maybe just maybe that theory isn't built on the strongest foundation.

For the vast majority of the period after man discovered the riddle of steel he couldn't heat it much beyond that point and yet he was still able to bend it into all kinds of fanciful shapes by applying far less energy than the supports of a high rise are under.

It doesn't have to melt it, just weaken it. Gravity does the rest.

Then again, I suppose 500 ninjas could place charges under the cover of darkness over a period of a few weeks without anyone seeing them and all of them maintaining their silence over a period of several years. Unless...they were all eliminated in the blast. :paranoid:

I can understand that. It was an event that was completely unprecedented and outside the experience of any of us. No one had ever seen anything like that before.

I can remember when the Challenger exploded, seeing it over and over in the following days...and it was just so alien to me that it was hard to actually assimilate.
