Beijing Olympics - Men's Soccer Gold Medal

I know almost nothing about soccer; however, I do know they have tournaments for counties to qualify for the Olympics and each area/continent is allocated so many spots (i.e. all the teams can't come from Europe and South America, etc.). Based on the following website, am I correct that there are 16 teams in the 2008 Olympics and the "other countries not listed" bet would be for New Zealand and Honduras?

Yes, and any extremely unlikely last minute replacement.

Age limit?

If you are over 23, you can't compete in the Olympics? I didn't think any olympic sport had an age limit.

Surprises me that some of the big soccer powers (Germany, Portugal, Mexico, England, France, Spain, Russia, Columbia) didn't qualify.

Soccer has an age limit of 23, but each squad is allowed 3 "overage" player slots out of the 18 man team.

I guess it's a combination of the Olympics distinguishing themselves from the World Cup (or else it would be pretty much the same teams) and also the fact that a lot of the older star players have club team commitments as their seasons get underway around the same time as the Olympics. The club teams (Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, etc) put a lot of money into these players being on the field for them and they won't generally release their players to play for their country.

I heard that Brazil has announced that Robinho and Ronaldinho will be playing on the team.

Kinda makes me put my vdough on them.

Thanks for adding the 3 "overage" rule... I inadvertently missed that.

Yeah you can only have 3 players over the age of 23 in your roster. Brazil chose Ronaldinho, Robinho and Rafinha, but they already have a great team with Diego and Pato. The Gold medal is the only thing that has eluded the Brazilians in their long storied history of the sport. Samuel Eto'o believes he will be chosen once again to represent Cameroon and defend their Gold medal from the 2004 Olympics.

It will be interesting to see which players will actually play in the olympics after numerous clubs have stated they will do all that they can to keep there players from going. However FIFA president Sepp Blatter said that any club that refuses to let any player called up to represent there country that is 23 years of age or younger will not be allowed to play that player until the country the player plays for is knocked out of the competition.
