BCS predictions/discussion/Knock Em' Off

Ohio State, with a month to prepare, can handle a spread offense regardless of who runs it.

Our advantage will be that we can use exactly the same game plan that we used against Illinois. We'll just execute it better due to having more time to learn and prepare. The other team will have no idea what is coming; because we were out of position so often against Illinois, they won't have any idea what we were trying to do.

West Virginia would be tough - on the run.

Where they would be less tough in my opinion is in the following areas ...

In their passing game (compared to Illinois on 11/10). ...

In their Pass Defense game

and I also believe that their rushing Defense would be well tested by the Buckeyes - which could open things up for the pass.

Meanwhile, while you cannot take away from West Va. the good defensive ranking they have earned this season, the fact remains it has been achieved against a questionable schedule, and some of the teams that have prospered statistically - like Marshall - are surprising.

It brings a question to my mind about the overall solidity of that defense.

Of course, I'm sure West Va. fans can turn this point counterpoint around, most likely looking to the Illinois game as emblematic.

A heavy dose of Beanie would be the prescription. Of course the only way we have a shot is if we make it to the game in the first place! And you never know.. a "Dixon" could happen to p. white, and they could have 2 - 3 losses by seasons end.

This is why I doubt any form of the option will be viable in the NFL for the long term.

As long as KU isn't undefeated at the end I'll take our chances in a 3 way beauty contest of 1 loss teams. I don't think who's currently behind who will be as big a factor as some think.

My big concern in a beauty contest is that that big zit scar OSU has from 1/8. Last year shouldn't matter but there still seems to be a lot of "OSU will get smoked by any southern team" attitude out there. I'd prefer KU, Mizzou, and WVU all lose a game and make the arguement all about who will play (and of course beat with their wicked speed) OSU.

If we end up playing WVU, controlling the clock and winning the field position game would be critical to handicapping the 'Neers scheme. Forcing White and Slaton to drive the length of the field every time they get the ball increases the chances of mistakes on their part. Turn the ball over and give them a short field and we are just where we were last year in the NC game - fucked.

You know what this season reminds me of? 1998. When we lost to Michigan State we figured it was all over for us. It was the first year for the BCS, and so we didn't quite understand how it worked, but I remember following it closely and knowing that if certain things happened we'd have a good shot. Lots of things did happen that year, and we ended up finishing #3 in the BCS. Still can't believe that Florida State was ranked higher than us in the BCS, although I have heard that if the current format was used, we'd have been #2, but I don't know enough about the specifics of the changes to know if that's true or why.

And as far as people who say we are "backing-in" to the National Championship game...it's not like we are playing less games, we just didn't have a bye week. We played and won our conference championship game last weekend. If we were playing The Game this weekend, people wouldn't call it backing in. I think it hurts us not playing now...winning is better than staying idle, and we had 12 chances to lose, just like everyone else (except for conference championship games).

Look at the blemishes on the other chicks in the contest and consider we are still the big name and big money draw compared to them.

Agreed but only the run in the interior. All of Illinois big plays all went right up the gut...our D doesn't allow runs to the perimeter. I would think you would see a lot of Owen Schmit and Pat White right up the middle, maybe an occasional Steve Slaton. Right now I say Missouri beats Kansas, loses to OU in the Big 12 championship game, and we play WVU in the NC game...let's hope.

Who Would the Bucks Play in the BCS

Ok, here are three very likely scenarios that could play out that I wanted to get thoughts on. Who would the Bucks play in the BCS championship game if these happen

1) West Virginia loses a game in the next two weeks

2) Oklahoma wins the Big 12

3) Tennessee wins today against Kentucky


Would love to hear who you think we would end up playing

Not to flame our WVU friends, but at this point- I believe that the match up against WVU in the NC game would be easier than a Rose Bowl match up against USC. Both offenses can be great, but from the games that i've seen, USC has a much stronger defense.

RB, I think you have the most likely scenario. The KU-Mizzou battle is being hyped for those guys as the biggest game in the history of their rivalry. It's at a neutral site, in prime time, and the players are even saying that a loss makes their respective seasons meaningless. How hyped can they get for Oklahoma in the B12 title game after that? Meanwhile, Oklahoma should be coming in fired up to save their season and get back to the BCS to redeem their loss to Boise State. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I can see the KU-Mizzou winner coming out flat against Oklahoma, and the Sooners being fired up and ready to play.

I've got my vCash on UConn, but I don't have much faith in their the Huskies or Panthers to slow down WVU.
