One of the most common activities for Ohio State fans is to compare the current edition of the Buckeyes to the teams of yesteryear. It is most common to compare great teams to the National Champions of old. Hence, there have been some great posts comparing this year's bunch to some past teams. Jax had a great thread comparing this season to 1957 (downright eerie). 808 just made a great post, minutes ago, in the Tressel thread, comparing this year to 2002.

But to me, the 1998 season has parallels that are unique.

  • There was the late season head-scratcher of a loss in the 'Shoe (that teams only loss).
  • The 1998 Buckeyes played their bowl in the Superdome (1999 Sugar Bowl against Texas A&M).
  • The 1998 Buckeyes returned to the same bowl that they had lost the year before (the Sugar).
    • The BCS-CG is in fact the same bowl, even if the location has changed.
But that's where the similarities end, Buckeye-wise.
But there is one similarity to the team that DID win that year's NC.
  • Tennessee won the 1998 NC -- the year immediately following the departure of their best-ever quarterback (Peyton Manning).

and scUM won what was then called the Citrus Bowl, now the Cap 1, in a shootout.

just sayin.:wink2:

As I sit and try to wrap my head around this game I can't help but like our chances. All of the talk has been spewed, all of the lame news stories have been filed. What is left now is 2 great teams stepping on the field and knocking heads for 60 minutes. It's a classic showdown that almost has taken on a legendary status to the Buckeye faithful.

Most of the media says that we can't win this game. Most of the fans say that we'll get our ass kicked tomorrow. We've lost 8 bowl games in a row to the SEC, there is no way that the Buckeyes win this one. LSU will be playing a home game, the hostile crowd will take the Buckeyes out of this one. At least that is what they all say. But the magical thing about college football, and athletic competition as whole, is that rules are meant to be broken. History is exactly that.........history. The Buckeyes have a chance to begin a new chapter in the history of college football, for them......as well as the Big Ten. This game in many ways has taken on it's own meaning, it's a game that not only Ohio State, but in some ways the state of Ohio, needs.

You see, most people can only take so much of taunting from a bully. Sure, he may have knocked you down a time or two, but eventually you are going to throw down the gloves and fight that son-of-a-bitch. Folks.....that SOB is the LSU Tigers tomorrow night........that SOB is the national media........that SOB is everyone who is doubting the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Those who are most successful in life are the ones who don't repeat past mistakes. Tomorrow Jim Tressel and his well prepared squad are going to avenge that ugly debacle from last season. It's time to play ball.........

OSU- 31

Less than 24 hours, time for a prediction.

I think LSU makes mistakes that OSU capitalizes on.

LSU's strength comes from inside the defensive line, where OSU is strong as well.

LSU runs a more traditional offense, one that, frankly, OSU has a history of dominating.

Looking at the lines, I'm really liking this matchup between LSU's offense and our defense. Look for a game similar to Michigan, and the only folks excited watching it are Buckeyes.

OSU - 17
LSU - 3

Good post.

I've said it before.. last year after the loss I found comfort in knowing one thing: A JT coached team will never have that happen to them again.

Redemption. Buckeyes roll 38 - 20
