Give me an estimate - or better yet a count verified by an independent body - of the number of households that do not get ESPN.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle the rights. Does ESPN push a playoff?

It creates controversey to do it, but the rights to a college playoff are worth significantly more than a BCS series. If they push playoff, essentially they are asking to pay more for rights to the playoffs when it comes up for bids.

Sounds like ESPN will be airing 4 BCS games a year starting with the 2010 season (January 2011 to January 2014).

98 Million homes get ESPN. 1/3 of the US. I thought it'd be more, but it will surely go up in 2 more years.

98 million homes is much different than 98 million people. The percentage is much, much higher than 1/3 of the population. I think there are between 110 and 115 million households, so that's over 80 percent.

Very Accurate guess BB 73, according to this 2007 Nielsen census:

Nielsen Reports 1.1% increase in U.S. Television Households for the 2006-2007 Season | Nielsen Media Research

The Nielsen Company estimates that the total number of television households within the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) will be 112.8 million by January 1, 2008, an increase of 1.3 percent since last year.

Ah, but the reason they were able to move the games from ABC to ESPN is NBC picked up the Sunday night game, therefore keeping the same amount of games on OTA networks. It was basically a flip flop of nights.

Now, Dish does not broadcast my locals in HD, so this is a good thing for me. However, what pisses me off is the fact that the Championship Bowl Games are on pay tv...ugh. And guess what else? Now we get to hear Mark "I'm a fucking Douchebag" May talk about how if it was USC in the Championship then everything would be better, and how USC's defnese is so good, and how USC's loss to Oregon State wasn't a big deal...shoot me now, every pregame, halftime and postgame of every BCS game will feature this asshole. Ugh.

Well, seeing how the announcers are like "The Official SEC Announcing Crew", but the network is very "Big 10". Thats why if the OSU games aren't on ABC (Owned by Disney, which owns ESPN) they are on ESPN. The big-wigs have more at stake with the B10 than the SEC, whether Rece Davis, Mark May or others are huge SEC supporters or not.

I'm not exactly sure of the details, but I do know the ESPN has an agreement with the B10 to be the primary telecaster of B10 Football...thats another reason why the B10NET only shows 1 or 2 games a week.

Aside from the quality of the broadcasts(FOX looks like crap but so does ABC) I really see no difference. There really aren't many broadcasters that are worth a shit anymore to listen to. Like politicians they all have their own agendas and would much rather talk about something other than the game that is going on.

It's pretty simple... beat the SEC, and they shut up. The ENTIRE foundation of this hyperbole is Ohio State's "unworthy" beatdowns, which is quite ironic and self-defeating when analyzed.


The B12 hype is fast approaching the SEC (despite all fielding half squads, albeit talented ones). If they take it to the SEC, they take over. OSU was 1 win away from maintaining their conference hyperbole, which drove SEC fans nuts. If they take it to UF, the SC game isn't a big deal. UM played the clear #1 close, at their place.

ESPN it seems is as cyclical as the college game they cover. That should be no surprise given their fickle, tabloid style.

04? The Program feature on ESPN (OU)
05 - Greatest Team Ever (USC)
06 - OSU-UM real title game
07 - SEC, Big East hype
08 - SEC, B12

OSU went from worshipping OSU & their conf to assaulting them after just 2 games.

I think you're missing the part where ESPN will have a financial interest in ensuring the SEC does well.
