BCS Bashing/SEC Shutout (Merged)

If you cannot accept a basic assumption such as pollsters looking at margin of victories or opponents, then you must be one of those people who truly believe pollsters watch every game. Therefore, I cannot help you on that one.
Please...I have no delusions about the pollsters watching every game, which is another reason why I don't believe we should rely on their wisdom to hand-pick two teams.

By the way, according to the NCAA, Auburn's strength of schedule is 9th in the country. Oklahoma is 22nd, and USC is 31st.

Tell me, again, how Auburn's OOC sked is why they are "where they belong" at number 3?

Again, the ONLY reason Auburn is 3rd is because the pollsters had low expectations of them before the season. Period.

So its totally relevant that Auburn plays nobody on their out of conference games, but its not when usc plays nobody all year long.

If Cal makes the BCS, SC will have beaten 2 BCS teams. Here are the computer rankings of each of our opponents:

SOS.bmp

VaTech will go up a ot after beating Miami. Cal will go up very slightly if they win. UCLA, Colorado, and Tennessee will drop with a loss.

Cal has beaten NOBODY. So how is a convincing win over an unproven team relevant? It's because prior to the beginning of the season the teams that were gonna be playing for the national title were already chosen and if they weren't USC couldn't be number 1.

Cal has a better SOS than Tennessee. Their SOS is top 30.

So tell me this, if the polls were started in the middle of the season, who is ranked where? After playing 3 pushover bushleague teams, I highly doubt Auburn is #1 or #2 again. If neither of those teams in those positions lose all season, where is your argument?

The NCAA's schedule formula is terrible. According to it, playing an 11-0 Oklahoma or 11-0 Auburn is the same as playing an 11-0 Boise State.

1. If OSU was in Auburn's position, I would be very pissed, but tOSU would be there because of a lack of a good schedule. We had Texas Tech and Washington State in our OOC schedule. If OU and and USC were undefeated in 2002 we would have had a tougher road than any of them, but thats not what the AP cares about. They care about: how many times you throw it, and can and will you hang 70 on a conference bitch.

2. I wouldn't have a problem with the BCS as long as it assured that all undefeated teams would get a shot. It does not do this. I would like to see at least a +1 bowl system AS NEEDED. What is wrong with playing an extra game only when it is needed (ex: both 1 and 2 have the same record, and they didn't play eachother in the bowl game). Some seasons an extra game isn't needed, like the year FSU played an undefeated Va Tech, and when tOSU beat scUM south. There should be someway to assure that all undefeated teams from major conferences get a shot.

why does everyone ever think it will be crystal clear who the best team in college football is..???

if you have a playoff....the fans of the 12-0 team that had an "off" day and lost to the 9-2 team will say the system sucks....

if you dont have a playoff....this happens....

get over it....why is it so important to you to have a clear and away winner....it says more about you than it does anything else....

hows this for a thought...enjoy the games for what they are....fun.....entertainment...and stop complaining.....

did the best team in baseball win the world series this year?
how many wild-card teams have ended up winning it all? were they the best?

I can agree with that if agreed upon before the season.

My argument remains unchanged. Now let's take a look at yours.

Auburn's SOS is higher than USC and Oklahoma. All three of them are undefeated.

Where is YOUR argument? The whole damn thing was based on Auburn's OOC schedule, and yet, their overall schedule is stronger than both teams rated ahead of them.

The BCS, as it is used, does not work. It would be a good way to select an 8 team playoff field, but when three major conference teams go undefeated, and the one with toughest shcedule gets left out of the NC game, it doesn't work. Period.

I think the biggest joke this season is Oklahoma. The little 12 is an absolute joke this year, I would give the bid to USC and Auburn in a second over Oklahoma. Look at OU's OOC schedule, who have they played? Oh yeah, Oregon, Huston, and BGSU three real powerhouses. Their OOC schedule looks about the same as Auburn's to me, so you have to look at who has the more difficult conference, that is easily the SEC this year. If you rank the conferences the big 12 is near the bottom.
1. SEC
2. BIG 10
3. PAC 10
4. ACC
5a. little 12
5b. Big least

Nope not period. You just refuse to accept any other possible argument. The BCS is the agreed upon basis for determining the NC. Period.

The OOC schedule is massive in the eyes of pollsters. Proof? None needed. It is human nature just like Bobby Stoops scoring as many points as possible against Baylor for perception purposes. The polls will always be involved therefore human nature will always be involved. Is the SEC the strongest conference? Yup. However, the fact remains Auburn burnt itself early and pays late. Period.

the best way to end this might be to split the ncaa up.....by this i mean going to more of an ncaa basketball type scenario regarding power rankings....

where teams are rewarded greatly for playing super schedules......where it is recognized that a 9-2 ohio state is stronger than a 10-1 unlv.......

because the strong teams from the strong conferences match up every year..

an ohio state ooc would be: virginia, texas, stanford
a usc ooc would be: texas am, lsu, penn state
a oklahoma ooc would be: cal, michigan, florida

you get the point....make the best play the best in preseason like they do in college basketball....

hell kentucky and north carolina lined up in bball today......

I think it would be foolish to trash the BCS when it has potential. I think the common failure between the old system and the new is the human polls. Its time to have an NCAA committee, that is paid to watch the games, supplement the media poll and there should be some restrictions on the coaches poll. Another viable option would be every conference playing with at least 12 teams and having a championship, then a variant of the plus one. There are ways to work this out without conferences and bowls losing too much money. Currently, too many enjoy the system because it protects the powerhouses and ensures elitism. If the media wasn't in love with Urban Meyer, Utah would have never made a BCS bowl.

I like this idea a lot. This would eliminate a lot of the possible undefeated teams, and give us a shot to look at common opponents. If USC had played either Auburn or OU this year someone would have lost. It also would give us a great look at just how good or bad the different conferences are. It would still need a provision for a +1 AS NEEDED .... just in case.
