Barry Bonds still a slugger without a team

Home run king Barry Bonds is still a man without a baseball team. But he's still ready to play, according to his agent.
Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, said the ex-Giants slugger "is in game shape right now," according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"The only thing he hasn't done is face live pitching," Borris said, according to the report. "He's doing all the baseball drills he normally does as he works to get in shape for spring training. His legs are as solid as ever."

The Giants let Bonds go after his record-breaking 2007 season, deciding to go with youth and ending the slugger's 15-year run as the starting left fielder. While Bonds had 28 home runs and a .480 on-base percentage in 340 at-bats last season, he will turn 44 in July and has played the last few seasons with a balky right knee.

Bonds: Typos could compromise case

Barry Bonds has submitted court papers complaining his chances for a fair trial could be hurt by typographical errors in a government filing wrongly accusing him of flunking a drug test in 2001.
Bonds has pleaded not guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice, and is asking a judge to dismiss the case.
In a filing last week opposing Bonds' motion for dismissal, prosecutors referred to a drug test Bonds failed in November 2001. They later said those were typos, and they meant to reference a November 2000 drug test also mentioned in the indictment.

Bonds facing long odds in bid to get case dismissed
Barry Bonds has little chance of having his perjury case dropped. Bonds' lawyers were scheduled to ask U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston today to dismiss a federal indictment charging him with perjury and obstruction of justice for his grand jury testimony, in which he denied knowingly using illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

What Barry Bonds Told The Grand Jury - February 29, 2008

While the entire Bonds transcript is worth a read, we particularly enjoyed his answer to a question posed by one juror about Greg Anderson, the athlete's beleaguered friend and trainer. "With all the money you make, have you ever thought of maybe building him a mansion or something?" Bonds replied, "One, I'm black. And I'm keeping my money. And there's not too many rich black people in this world. And I'm keeping my money. There's more wealthy Asian people and Caucasian and white. There ain't that many rich black people. And I ain't giving my money up. That's why."

Unsealed documents will show Bonds had additional positive drug tests

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge ordered Barry Bonds' grand jury testimony unsealed on Friday.
In addition to documents from Bonds' testimony, a source familiar with the government's evidence told ESPN's T.J. Quinn that among the exhibits turned over to Bonds' defense team is evidence of an additional positive steroids test beyond the previously reported one in November 2000.
The U.S. Attorney's office had previously disclosed that Bonds tested positive for testosterone, but information about other failed tests has not been previously disclosed.

Federal judge orders prosecutors to redraft their indictment of Bonds

A federal judge in San Francisco told prosecutors yesterday to redraft their indictment of Barry Bonds and made public his grand jury testimony, revealing a previously unpublicized drug test from seven years ago that showed an elevated testosterone level.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston ordered prosecutors to amend Bonds' November indictment so that each of the five counts against him don't cite multiple statements that prosecutors say are false.

Reuters: Prosecutors to seek new Barry Bonds indictment

Prosecutors to seek new Barry Bonds indictment

By Adam Tanner

Federal prosecutors said on Wednesday they would seek a new indictment against home run king Barry Bonds after previous perjury charges were recently thrown out.

Last month, a federal judge ruled the U.S. government did not properly structure its charges that the seven-time National League Most Valuable Player lied to a federal ground jury about past steroid use.

"Pursuant to the Court's written order of March 4, 2008, we write to inform the Court and counsel that the government intends to seek a superseding indictment in this case," U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello wrote in a legal filing.

He did not provide further details.

After years investigating doping in professional sports, prosecutors suffered a setback on February 29 when federal Judge Susan Illston ruled the government made overly broad arguments in its four perjury counts.

The judge agreed with Bonds' lawyers that the charges were duplicitous, meaning they improperly included two or more offenses in a single count. The government could tailor new charges more narrowly to avoid that issue in the future.

Bonds' perjury case delayed as government seeks new charges

SAN FRANCISCO -- The perjury case against Barry Bonds was put on hold for three months Friday, with prosecutors telling a federal judge they plan to obtain a new indictment against baseball's home run king.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston had told prosecutors on Feb. 29 to fix their original indictment because it lumped multiple allegations into too few counts. Illston said that prosecutors needed to drop some of the allegations from the indictment or add more charges.

I'd happily take it for 1 year-3 or 4 mill.

His statistics are still through the roof. He basically has a 40-45% chance of ending up on first base every time he comes to the plate.

And he's getting ripped apart for something over a hundred guys have admitted too.

He's an asshole and he deserves whatever he gets for refusing to come cleanabout his steroid use.

As a fan of the Tribe, I'd still have no issues with making him our 4 or 5 hitter.

JMO. It'd never happen though.
