Bama's Defense for spread teams

Aubie414

Rookie
Needless to say, I hope that the Buckeyes beat the Bamas being that I am an Auburn fan but I just wanted to give you Buckeye fans a little insight about Nick Saban and Kirby Smart's game plan which they win with more than they lose with against spread teams.

Nick's base Defense this year is a 4-3 (depends on his personal, I think he is a 3-4 coach at heart), but for spread teams, Alabama switches to a nickel (4 linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 dbs)... They are very stubborn with this defense being that a dime might be better against spread teams but I think he likes this nickel defense for two reasons.... ON THIRD DOWN, THEY WILL BLITZ THAT SLOT DB and surprise teams at times.... ON THIRD DOWN, THEY BLITZ ONE OF THE LINEBACKERS UP THE MIDDLE to flush the qb out and cause a rushed throw.

If that fails horribly, they then switch to a dime, blitz the one middle line backer or have him spy then trust their weak secondary, If you make it to this point, you are doing very well :)

This year, Alabama's front four are much better than usual but the db's are much worse than usual so this should be interesting to see how much pressure they generate with their front four to try to protect those sorry dbs. Big 10 O-lines seem to give SEC teams a very hard time every bowl season but a Big 10 spread team might not (Judging by Michigan's effort) but I hope that I am wrong :)

Thanks and welcome to BP. Good analysis.

but yeah, you are wrong in using scUM as a comparison to OSU in any way shape or form.

It's not only bad football analysis, it's down right rude.

You are new so we'll give you a pass on the insult part.

Thanks for the pass Jax....lol... Bama fans especially have zero respect for the Big 10 since their last two outings vs Michigan and Michigan State (2 blow outs )... they are already looking forward to Florida State fellas but I know Ohio State keeps a good defense, I just hope it comes to play.

M*ch*gan is a bad team regardless of conference but as far as respect and all that goes you'd think they'd be a little more self aware after Oklahoma beat them last year.

Most of the non trolling Bama visitors have been fine actually, nothing like the shit show that was Miami leading up to 2002 NC game.

The exchanges with UF and LSU fans before 2006 and 2007 weren't bad either. Gator nation showed their ass big time after the 2006 NC game. LSU fans were pretty sociable.

The Bamas logic: "We didn't want to be there, that is why we let Oklahoma win that game "

Yes, that is what they were saying, even their Utah lose some years ago also....

Of course they didn't :)

It will come down to how well the OL and scheme allow Cardale Jones to do against the Bama front 7. It is no secret that spread teams have had some offensive success against the Bama D.

OSU plays defense, especially on the DL and we will not be "out-athleted" but no one can handle Cooper. He will do some damage.

I know I am looking forward to it. Should be a good game.

If the Bama team shows up and plays like they did against ND a couple of years back, I don't see how we'll be able to beat them. Then again, it was a Brian Kelly coached ND. On the other hand, if the same tOSU team that beat Wisconsin shows up, that's a different battle.

We're not really that kind of a spread team. We use spread formations and some spread concepts, but our base run offense is very pro-style schematically, just with the additional threat of a running qb.
If they come out in nickel and dime defenses, we may not throw a pass all game.

Mississippi State runs the EXACT same offense that Ohio State runs being that Dan Mullen was Urban's O coordinator for many years, I haven't looked but I bet youtube has the Miss st vs Bama game, you will see Alabama attack that set with nickel because bama believes their front four and two linebackers are good enough to stop your run without help, unfortunately, they are usually right.

This year's Miss. St team is not sorry as usual, their personnel is athletic and quick like yours but they ran into two buzzsaw defenses and lost because running over Alabama and Ole Miss is not an option with the strength of their front 7.

I think you Buckeye fans will find that game interesting because State is a run heavy team EXACTLY like y'all but Dan Mullen knows better, you guys will be pass heavy when y'all beat the bamas, that is how Tebow did it... Saban has seen Miss st every year (same division) even since Urban has been gone so Ohio State better change.

Oklahoma did it being pass heavy, the buckeys better be... Bama secondary is very suspect this year, they will try to take advantage of that hopefully.

Only thing I would add is that I think the OSU receivers are more of a weapon than MSU's. That could just be me being a homer, we shall see.

All in all I think Cardale Jones works for us in two ways, one he is the best pure passer of the bunch and two, they have limited film on him. Obviously you'd rather have your #1 guy but since that isn't an option those are the two positives as I see them.

Mississippi State lost that game on turnovers, two in the redzone. They were able to execute their offense pretty well when they held onto the ball, and I think we are better at the skill positions. The o-line might be closer but I still think we're better there too, MSU was shuffling guys around all year because of injuries. Our unit was extremely green and started the season rather auspiciously, but they've grown into a strength for the team. Cardale is still a big x-factor of course.
