Bama encourages recruit to transfer High Schools

"Paige, a senior defensive tackle who has verbally committed to play football at the University of Alabama, transferred to Foley High School in Alabama on Tuesday amid allegations that Crimson Tide assistant coach Jeremy Pruitt recommended he go to Foley because they could ?take care of him academically.?

How is this ok? Why aren't we hearing more about it? I guess this is just an acceptable practice in the SEC ...

I am pretty sure Matta recommended Crater attend Brewster Academy and leave his current HS. I think I remember reading that the high school in this terrible state of Michigan wasn't that pleased.

But recommending a player to attend an academy would be different than suggesting a recruit can be taken care of (inflated GPA, I assume?) at another high school.

I agree that the aims can be completely different. Matta wanted Crater to get away from the neighborhood influences. If Bama's motivation is to boost GPA by putting him in a school that would inflate grades that is clearly a dirty tactic. But there is a fine line here... I can see Bama saying they want to get the player out of the neighborhood and away from the influences that affect his studies.

Seems like a newly built (re-built) school with nearly 100 teachers on staff. I am not certain it's as sinister as it first appears.

If the kid is on the margins, I don't see any harm in steering him towards a school with a better teacher:student ratio, better labs, and fewer distractions.

If this is the same story, I heard a guy call into Bill King's show on XM/Sirius radio yesterday morning, claiming that the school that they want him to transfer to is able to provide more "credits" than his current school. Sounded like this kid is pretty far behind acedemically and has a lot to make up.

at Bama it has never been about the college experience or academic progress of the player. Bama is a football program pure and simple. They win. They use every tactic to gain an advantage on the field with little to zero concern for collateral effects. They always push the limits....sometimes get caught cheating...but always push it to the max.

I admire their passion for winning and their ability to stay off of sanctions as much as they do. As big as football is in Ohio, it is even bigger in Alabama. Winning football is everything to them and the entire society down there will do what it can to protect its ability to win on the field.

The school they're recommending has "block" scheduling.

Which means he can take 2 more courses per semester than at his old high school.

So if he's behind in core credits at his old school, he can make up some of those credits without needing summer school, or a whole other year.

Bama is involved, so it may be shady.

But I personally know people (non-athletes) around here who did the same thing when some of our schools went to block scheduling.

Some did it to catch up so they could finish on time.
Some did it to jump ahead and graduate early.

Is this the same high school that Bama "donated" a ton of money too.....and it just so happened that a high profile recruit was attending? I'm too lazy to look it up.

Would that be the story about them pumping a ton of money into the school to renovate the football facilities so they could practice for a bowl game there for several weeks? Clearly there were no better options in the area and the decision had nothing to do with the recruit that happened to attend that school.
