John Harbaugh: Ravens' decision on kicker will be 'based on football'
May 5, 2025, ≈11:07 AM
The Baltimore Ravens drafted kicker Tyler Loop in the sixth round of last month's draft as veteran Justin Tucker remains under league investigation for potential improper conduct.
During the Ravens' rookie minicamp on Sunday, coach John Harbaugh was asked about the dynamic of having both in the building at this stage. The coach said the only focus is on what will happen on the field during the potential kicker battle.
"I would just say from the standpoint of the investigation and all that, we don't know anything," Harbaugh said, via the team's official transcript. "We haven't been given any information, as it should be. It's all done the way it's done. So, we don't know anything along those lines, so you can't make any decisions based on that.
"Every decision we make has to be based on football. There's a lot of layers to that. You've got a rookie kicker in here. We took him in the sixth round, early in the sixth round. He's a talented guy. Just from a football standpoint, salary cap, all the different things that you just take into consideration --
whatever we decide to do over the next few weeks would be based on football."
The Ravens on Monday released kicker Justin Tucker, parting ways with the NFL's most accurate kicker who is being investigated by the league for sexual misconduct.

Ravens make 'tough decision,' release kicker Justin Tucker

In an unceremonious end to one of the greatest Ravens careers, Baltimore released kicker Justin Tucker on Monday, parting ways with the NFL's most accurate kicker amid an investigation by the league for sexual misconduct.
"Sometimes football decisions are incredibly difficult, and this is one of those instances," Ravens executive vice president and general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement. "Considering our current roster, we have made the tough decision to release Justin Tucker.
"Justin created many significant and unforgettable moments in Ravens history. His reliability, focus, drive, resilience and extraordinary talent made him one of the league's best kickers for over a decade. We are grateful for Justin's many contributions while playing for the Ravens. We sincerely wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives."
The move comes less than two months after team president Sashi Brown said the Ravens would wait on making a decision on Tucker until the NFL finished its investigation. But the uncertainty about Tucker's future ramped up April 26, when Baltimore made the historic move of selecting kicker Tyler Loop in the sixth round of the NFL draft. That marked the first time in the franchise's 30 years that it drafted a kicker.
Just sayin': Well, that changed awful fast....
