I think it's partially because of the timing of having 3 games in the Phoenix area. Here's an article that talks about the Fiesta Bowl committee organizing the events for all of the teams.

usatoday

I could see the folks in Glendale being quite happy with having a bunch of Buckeye and Gator fans in for a whole weekend before the big game. Of course they might have stayed after if it was on Friday, but the big partying would have been done on Friday night. Now they get anticipatory partying.

I had to waste some vacation days before they disappeared so I don't really mind the Monday game this year, but the championship game next year is going to either be alcohol free (doubtful) or result in a 24 hour flu. I really do miss the days of crappy bowl games starting in December and ending around Christmas, with the second tier games leading to the New Years smorgasboard (sp?) of "New Years Day Bowl Games" which actually used to mean something. The only real advantage I can see is that I won't have to pick between two bowl games I want to watch as most of them are spaced out enough or opposite the aforementioned who-gives-a-fuck and the oft-forgotten who-gives-a-shit bowl.

Just saw an ad for the Rose Bowl (again) and it is kind of burning my ass that scUM and the condoms get the 4:30 slot on New Years day. Can they both lose?

I could be wrong on this but I think the Rose Bowl was originally scheduled for Prime Time on NYD. I think all the BCS games were. If that is true, maybe some changes could be afoot. I too agree the schedule sucks as it is, New Years Day experience isn't what it used to be. We shall see..

Couple of points. The game next year is Jan 7th, also a Monday. BCS seems to be locked in on that date. As noted before, it sucks.

Having said that, Monday night football, especially when there are good matchups does pretty well. We will have a good audience as long as the game is close and entertaining. Given an 8:30 kickoff, it won't be over til midnight at best.

As for me, I am going to the game, but if I wasn't, I'd probably still have planned on taking both Monday and Tuesday as vacation days so that my boss didn't get any ideas about sending me off somewhere on a business trip. In fact, I might have just taken the whole week off since I didn't take any V time during the Christmas and New Years holidays. I mean why would I? Everyone else is off and there isn't anything to do anyway other than surf the net and slip off from work around noon and play a little golf.

Then it's time to work on it. Get the Big 10 ADs involved. The money deal is a two way street. TV NEEDS the product.

BUT isn't it true that Monday Night Football ratings have dropped sharply prior to this year? I'm a big football fan, but I haven't watched a MNF game to its conclusion in years. Most weeks I don't even turn it on because I know I can't stay up to watch it.

And therein lies the major point. It reminds me of the Democratic Convention of 1972 when McGovern gave the best speech that no one ever heard because he didn't get on stage until after 11. By midnight on Monday the kids will have gone to bed or fallen asleep on the TV room floor. The barkeeps will have that why-don't-you-drink-up-and-go-home look in their eyes. The parade is nice, but you go to see the coronation.

I guess I'm fortunate to work in retail, and for a company that's pretty lenient with time off given advance notice. On 11/19 I put in for my off days to be the 9th and the 10th and to get off at 5:00PM on the 8th. Two strategically planned doctors appointments and the boss went ahead and gave me off on the 8th also, so I'm set for the game and the subsequent (hopefully) celebration with a day of recovery to boot.

I'll agree with all that feel this current setup is ridiculous. Friday would have been good, but ideally this game would have been played in Prime Time on the 6th. Screw the NFL, let them play their playoff games in the afternoon, same as always- 1:00PM kickoffs and 4:15PM kickoffs.
