B1G Tournament (March 14th-17th) Chicago's United Center

Nebraska holding steady with under five left in the first half.

For some ungoshly reason, BTN is tracking distance run and speed of players on its new live stats (good on 'em, I suppose):

I know it could be because of the match-ups (PUR/NEB and IA/NW), but I don't like the fact the Big Ten is on ESPN2 and not ESPN. Don't know why that bothers me.

They are on ESPN2 and not ESPN because 2nd round Big East games in basketball are better (and probably higher rated games) than 1st round games in the Big Ten tourney....

You're right. Louisville is ranked, so they have that on Purdue/Nebraska.

And D.J. Byrd is extremely cold right now (and the past month), 1-for-5 at half for 3 points.

Kendrick Nunn and Malcolm Hill should help, especially Nunn.

Groce already had ties to the Chicago schools, so he'll be fine.

I'm actually interested to see what happens when the Big Ten adds the coastal schools (New Jersey, Maryland, D.C., Carolina, Georgia, etc.) and vice versa (them coming into Chicago and Indiana to recruit).

Don't forget that Groce had a transfer Rayvonte Rice sitting out this year, and he will play next year. Rice was a fairly big scorer in the MVC last year and he will have a big role next year with Richardson and Paul moving on. But I do think it was kind of inconvenient timing for Groce to be coming in with minimal time to recruit to replace his big Senior class this year, when this was the best time to get a top-10 type class but he couldn't really put it together. He will have to build them up the hard way, inching forward year after year.

Wonder if he will be back next year. Awful job of controlling his players and coaching.

Tubby has really put himself on the hot seat with his team's performance this year. There's no excuse to be this mediocre with a full roster in your sixth year. Plus he's always floating his name out there every year for other jobs to see if he can get a better job and more money. Contrast Tubby & Beilein - both came in at the same time and inherited very bad teams, and both were paid similarly big bucks, but there is a big difference between the levels of their programs at this point.

Good win for Nebraska to beat Purdue in the Big Ten tourney. They held on for a close win and will face the Bucks tomorrow. Actually it might be slightly better for OSU to face the Huskers since they were already higher in the RPI than Purdue entering the game today and might be able to become a top-100 win for OSU now (they were #103 entering play today whereas PU was 117). My thoughts are that bumping Nebraska into the top-100 of the RPI might make OSU's resume look better as they look at the record against the top-100 for seeding purposes.

At this point, if Tubby really wants to take a job at Auburn or USC or something, take it. And if I'm the Minnesota admins, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

He's probably going to make the tournament this year, unless people start stealing bids, so it's really the admins expectations for the program (is making the tourney good enough).

You know, this first day of the Big Ten tourney is doing a pretty good job of clearing out the driftwood teams that are stumbling down the stretch and not playing good basketball for the most part. Purdue had seemed to be playing well at the end of the regular season but were out of sorts in the conference tourney, but good for the Big Ten to be shipping PSU, Minny and (likely) Northwestern home tonight.

It took me until their final game of the season to realize Northwestern had an Orthodox Jewish player, Aaron Liberman, on the team (even an Under Armour logo on the yarmulke).

End of the game sounded like Bill Carmody's obit from Tirico and Dakich. It's up to Jim Phillips now.
