    COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the first time in 20 years, the Ohio State baseball team will travel west to the Valley of the Sun. The Buckeyes will play four games in the desert this week, including two against a Top 5 opponent Thursday through Sunday at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. Ohio State (2-2) will open action against the defending Pac-12 champions Utah (2-1) at 7 p.m. ET Thursday, take on No. 5 Oregon State at 3 p.m. ET Friday, the Utes again at 9:30 p.m. ET Saturday and will conclude play in a second contest against the Beavers at 11 a.m. ET Sunday.

    All four games will be played at Surprise Stadium, the Spring Training facility for the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers.

    Ohio State baseball heads to the desert for the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge
    The Buckeyes will get an early season taste of elite competition in Arizona.

    It may only be the second weekend of the season, but the Ohio State baseball team is already facing a monumental challenge, as it travels to Arizona to take part in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. The Buckeyes will play four games against two teams, including one of the top teams in the nation, which should give head coach Greg Beals a good idea of how much work the club has ahead of it if it hopes to contend for a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

    In four games at the Sunshine State Classic to open the season, we saw the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly from Ohio State. The Buckeyes went 2-2 in Florida, and their performance showed the kinds of inconsistencies expected from a team with so much inexperience.

    “We need to work on our quality at-bats and be more prepared defensively,” Beals said. “We need to get better at the little things and we will.”

    Ohio State opened the weekend looking good offensively, scoring 21 runs in the first two games down south. But the Buckeyes mustered just four in the final two outings, collecting only 13 hits while striking out 13 times and leaving 16 runners on base.


    Seniors Zach Ratcliff and Jalen Washington stood out at the plate, as one would hope they would. Ratcliff was a monster, going 7-for-16 with a pair of home runs, five runs scored and six runs batted in, while Washington had an 5-for-13 weekend of his own, doubling twice and driving in a pair.

    The starting pitching was also inconsistent. Quality starts by Adam Niemeyer and Jake Post bookended the weekend, but Yianni Pavlopoulos and Ryan Feltner got knocked around a bit. In all, Ohio State’s starters logged 20 innings in the four games, yielding 13 runs, 10 earned, on 21 hits, striking out just five and walking five.

    The bullpen also had its struggles, giving up 10 runs, eight of which were earned, in 15 innings of duty, with Seth Kinker, Austin Woodby, and Reece Calvert all giving up multiple runs. The bright spot for the pen was Kyle Michalik, who tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, and freshmen Andrew Magno and Gavin Lyon, each of whom had scoreless debuts.


    Adding to the difficulties was sloppy defense. Ohio State committed eight errors, and had just one clean game. Brady Cherry was charged with three of those, and Washington and Bo Coolen had two apiece. Buckeye hurlers also uncorked four wild pitches and hit four batters, something that will need to be addressed.

    Buckeyes slip below .500, losing streak at 3.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped its opener of the 2017 Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenger against Utah on a chilly Thursday night at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. Utah powered 12 runs on 16 hits, while Ute freshman left-hander Jacob Rebar limited the OSU bats to no runs on four hits in his first career start. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 2-3 overall, while the Utes improve to 3-1 in 2017.

    UTAH SCORES BIG EARLY ON
    The Utes jumped out to an eight run lead through the first four frames. Utah plated the first run in the bottom of the first after a bunt play and throwing error set up back-to-back ground outs to push DaShawn Keirsey Jr. around home. A bunt was fielded in front of the dish by sophomore Jacob Barnwell, but his throw was deflected on a bang-bang play at first base and trickled down the first base line to score the error. Dallas Caroll collected the RBI in the inning.

    Buckeyes end losing streak, get back to .500 with win over #5 Oregon State

    COLUMBUS, Ohio – Yianni Pavlopoulos threw six shutout innings, while Brady Cherry went 2-for-4 with a home run to upset No. 5 Oregon State, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium in Surprirse, Ariz. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Beavers drop to 5-1 in 2017.

    “It was really clean game of baseball,” head coach Greg Beals said. “Today was a confidence booster for us. We are capable of playing that type of baseball against that type of opponent. We have some inexperience, but we are still learning how to play together. Today was a great example of how we need to go out and compete. Yianni was solid. He was able to pitch ahead in the count and had good action on his fastball as well as hit with his breaking ball. He was very good today.”

    Ohio State loses 6-4 to Utah

    SURPRISE, Ariz. – A late-inning rally fell short against Utah as the Buckeyes fell, 6-4, Saturday evening at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 3-4 overall, while the Utes improve to 5-1 in 2017. Utah plated six runs on 14 hits and was led by right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Ottesen, who limited the Buckeye bats to one run on three hits in six innings.

    Buckeyes finish with 5-1 loss to Oregon State

    SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Ohio State baseball team concluded action at the 2017 Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Oregon State Sunday morning in Surprise, Ariz. The Beavers chalked up three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth to improve to 7-1 on the year.

    The Buckeyes (3-5), who took down the tournament host on Friday night, were limited at the dish vs. right-hander Jake Thompson who tossed eight innings and gave up one run on two hits to improve to 3-0. Ohio State starting pitcher Jake Post received the loss to drop to 0-1. He allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.
