See my avatar? It's obviously bigger than 75x75. It's 150x107 (thanks AKAK).

Too big? Just right (in terms of max dimensions allowed to users)?

Chime in. We're going bigger, I just haven't decided how much bigger. One of the many requests we got in 'Terrible Twos' was bigger avatars allowing for more expression.

I beleive its 150 by 107... :wink2:

Anyway... I'd say not too much bigger thatn that... If I had to guess, I'd like to see a "mock up" of maybe a 125x125?

Is there anyway to let us have wide avatars, but not very tall ones? I don't think 125 or 150 is a big deal in terms of width... but that's on the bigger side for height.

The file size limit needs to be raised tho...

I'm more worried about height than width, I don't think we should go much past 100 there. So to refine my question, would you all prefer square at 100x100, rectangular at 150x100 (remember, these are just max restraints, existing avatars would still work), or something smaller?

I wouldn't go much higher than yours clarity. The width really doesnt matter, though too wide and a pic can look stupid. With much more height you risk clogging pages, like about 10 members I know with ridiculously large signatures who will remain nameless...wow i'm all about privacy today??

Is the one I'm using too high? Allowing that it's 7 pixels higher than we would allow.

The one I'm using is *definitely* too big in terms of file size. At 250k, it's somewhere between 5-10x bigger than I'm inclined to allow. But it was more about getting something visual up for the sake of deciding dimensional limitations.

Does anyone feel like, say, 25k is too small for an animated 100x150 image?

Maybe 50k max file size, with a dimension limit of 100x150. Also, you may want to force people to upload any signature images just like you do avatars. This would make page-loads faster because:

1.) Won't have to remotely load images from God-Know's-Where, and

2.) Can prevent 1MB signature files like BrutusMaximus' Jessica Alba pole dance .gif (I've been tempted many times to tell him use another one)

That's not the only temptation caused by that sig. :!

Sig handling is something to tackle at a later date, there's nothing native in vB that allows me to locally host those, and even if there were, I'd want to be able to set serious size (file size and image dimension) limits.

You do of course have the option in your UserCPs to turn off user sigs though. Not that it's ideal, but it works as a stopgap until I can get something systemic in place.

Right now hosted images are actually served from the database, I need to convert it all so they're being handled by the file system instead. But still want to prevent off-site linking/leeching. Grr.

So much to do, so little time.
