I guess I don't understand the rules. How does Auburn get away with that? Simply because the SEC is the only one watching?

A school can only have 25 new recruits enroll every year. The rules don't limit the number of accepted LOIs a school can sign in one year. Some of these schools get around that rule by getting recruits to enroll early/late. Of course, there are going to be some that don't make the cut due to academics or other reasons, which also lowers the # of new enrolled recruits each year.

ant80 - true on the different forms of casualty, but don't forget the cuts made when the SEC school's staff realizes that player "A" is just not as good as earlier believed. Point being, it messes with the options for a bunch of young kids. Kids who might otherwise have had a straight and clear path to another school of their choosing, regardless of the reasons why they are culled from the recruiting class.
The other fully intended effect of this practice is to take the potential student-athletes off the market. This is unfair to D-1AA teams that could accept those players the same season without similar hurdles, and frankly it is not upfront and fully honest to the kids or their families. That is why I believe the process employed by many SEC schools is despicable.

Nick Fairley's grade change 'may not be irregular'

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- The transcript of Auburn football signee Nick Fairley, initially viewed as having grades on it changed, "may not be irregular," Mobile County School Superintendent Harold Dodge said.

But Dodge said Tuesday he is still examining alleged grade changes involving Fairley and fellow Auburn recruit Ryan Williams and hopes to wrap up his investigation into the two Mobile-area players by week's end.

Declining to comment on specifics during the investigation, Dodge told The Birmingham News that Fairley's grade changes "may not be irregular. I don't know yet, but on the first blush it looks like that."

Fairley graduated from Williamson High School and Williams from B.C. Rain. The grade changes in question were allegedly made in June 2006, and were first reported by the Press-Register.

This occurred via the computer files of the player's high school. Auburn has not been implicated.

Report: Auburn signee has seven grade changes

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? Seven grades were changed on the transcript of a Williamson High School football player who signed to play with Auburn, likely affecting his college eligibility, the Press-Register of Mobile reported Wednesday.

Principal Terrance Mixon said officials now "pretty much know he's ineligible," but didn't identify the player.

He said he still doesn't know who changed the grades but has limited access to the computer program used to enter and change student transcripts to the school's registrar.

The principal said it wasn't clear when the changes were made and that the biggest grade increase was seven points. None of the grades were failing grades.

There has been no indication that Auburn is under investigation or had anything to do with the grade changes.
