OHIO LEADERS, VETERANS PUSH FOR QUICK PASSAGE OF SERVICE BONUS
(Columbus)--Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray and Ohio Senator Tim
Grendell today joined forces to push for quick passage of
Senate Joint Resolution 5, the Veterans' Service Bonus Amendment.
In a press conference with Senator Grendell prior to offering
proponent testimony before the Senate Finance Committee,
Cordray outlined the significance of the Service Bonus Amendment.
"The smooth and prompt passage of this proposal will send a
strong message of support to Ohio's service men and women,"
said Treasurer Cordray. "We stand behind them; we are grateful
and recognize their sacrifices."
The proposed Constitutional Amendment was initiated by
Treasurer Cordray last November after an Iraq veteran
identified the need. In the past, the state has offered a bonus
to Ohio veterans of both World Wars and conflicts in Korea and
Vietnam. Earlier this month, Senator Grendell introduced SJR 5.
"Ohio voters have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to
honoring the sacrifice of Ohio's veterans by approving monetary
bonuses," Senator Grendell said. "As a U.S. Army veteran, I am
confident that, if given the opportunity, Ohioans will once
again vote to help ease the transition back to civilian life."
Joining Senator Grendell and Treasurer Cordray in support of
SJR 5 were military veterans including U.S. Army Specialist
Doreen Lafferty of Westerville. Specialist Lafferty currently
serves in the U.S. Army Reserve, following active duty service
from 2003 through 2007.
"As a veteran who has experienced two tours of duty in Iraq, I
can tell you that the several hundred dollars which I would
likely receive if voters pass this measure would certainly
help," said Specialist Lafferty. "But what would be equally
valuable to me is the knowledge that my fellow Ohioans agreed
we deserve this recognition for our service, through their vote
on Election Day."
The proposed amendment would provide $100 for each month an
Ohioan served in theaters of the Persian Gulf, Iraq or
Afghanistan totaling up to $1,000 maximum, and would provide
$50 a month for those serving elsewhere during these conflicts
totaling up to $500 maximum. More information is available at
