Purdue's Sheets silenced after critical remarks
October 21, 2008 6:27 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

Purdue running back Kory Sheets has been prohibited from speaking to the media in the wake of his comments following Saturday's loss to Northwestern. Sheets criticized quarterback Curtis Painter for not passing him the ball during the game.

"I'm kind of starting to get used to it," Sheets said. "It seems like the defenses aren't even covering me because they don't think I'm going to get the ball anyway. It's been that way last week and the week [before]. So get used to it.

"A number of things are going through Painter's mind, and he's just kind of forgetting that I'm out there."

Sheets also said, "No comment," when asked if Painter was the quarterback who could lead the Boilermakers to victory.

Purdue coach Joe Tiller responded to Sheets' remarks at his news conference today.

"As I said to our own coaches, that he has grown physiologically but not intellectually in the last four years," Tiller said. "So if you know him, that's not a surprise. It's a disappointment."

"I think we all know Kory pretty well," he continued. "Anything that Kory says doesn't surprise any of us, players nor coaches. Kory is liable to say anything at any time. I have an issue with what he says somewhat. The other side of the coin is, you know, he's playing hard. I think his heart's in the right place. I think he's frustrated. I think it manifested itself in some comments. ... I don't think, from a deep-seeded point of view, that he's malicious or thinks anything really bad about his teammates. But I think he's frustrated. The guy's a competitive guy. He wants to win."

Cont'd ...

Tiller's "he has grown physiologically but not intellectually in the last four years" remark is questionable. Stop dancing, Joe, just come out and say it! Call Kory Sheets 'stupid' at your press conference!

They were talking a lot during the Purdue/PSU game about the fact that Tiller is retiting because he thinks today's athletes either don't take the game seriously enough or are distracted by too many things. Of course, he's also frustrated that his gimmick offense doesn't work anymore and he settled in to a nice run of mediocre teams for 5-7 years...

his gimmick offense doesn't work anymore
I think you mean that "his gimmick offense" doesn't work for Purdue anymore because it certainly does work for a lot of other college teams.

Sheets is one of my fantasy league players:eek:. I wonder if I should start him this week. They might not block for him.

True, but the spread option is en vogue now...not too many teams spread them 5 wide and throw out of it as much as Tiller likes to these days.

Most teams at least run the spread with a semi-athletic QB these days to be mobile in the pocket. Colt McCoy is a good example of that. If you can't keep defenses' honest with your feet in the spread, it becomes very difficult running straight 4 and 5 wide sets.

Tiller HATES any kind of dissent from him, about the coaching, or the team in general. Thus he decides to "silence" Kory Sheets so we can continue to hear his (Tiller's) and Curtis Painter's vanilla, scripted post game comments. Let me elaborate.

Tiller: "I thought Curtis had a good game, just made a couple poor decisions out there. He made all the right reads." --insert this after just about every embarrassing loss where the QB play pathetic.

Painter: "Uhhh you know, those guys are really fast, they have a great defense...I made a few errors out there but the other team is just awesome."

Unfortunately for these two guys it doesn't come down to "reads" or "decisions". It's about performance. Tiller's and Painter's vanilla, "there's nothing wrong at all" type comments after every loss really tick me off. They show no emotion, never show they are pissed about a loss or how they performed (or coached). To me it just shows they are mentally clueless.

I applaud what Sheets did. Calling out the QB play, the coaching, it shows me he CARES. He wants to win. He's being a leader. I thought it was hilarious when a reporter asked him if Curtis Painter was the QB who could lead the team to victory, he said "no comment". Maybe it's time for Old Joe to hang it up now and hit the lakes or ponds a little early. He's now just coming off as a cranky old man who won't take any kind of criticism, and doesn't really care how his team performs this year since he's almost done. He calls out Sheets for being critical, but then himself gets a shot in saying "he hasn't grown intellectually the past 4 years". What a hypocrite.

I just wish once a reporter would get the balls to challenge Joe with some of the questions I'm asking right now.
