    COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

    Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said.

    When I was growing up, ACC was my very favorite writer. In addition to some of the books mentioned above (Rama, Childhood's End, 2001, City and the Stars), I was very fond of A Fall of Moondust (weak characters, but incredible page-turning action) and Tales From the White Hart (still one of my very favorite short story collections, in any genre).

    RIP to my favorite author. I have read many of his books - Childhood's End, The Fountains of Paradise, The City and the Stars, the Odyssey series, the Rama series, and my favorite of his recent collaborations, The Light of Other Days - which is just a damn good read even if you aren't into sci-fi.

    Edit: And nothing beats Pink Floyd's "Echoes" synched up to the final sequence of 2001:

    Yep and it was just announced Terry Pratchett has rapid onset alzheimers.

    The loss of Madeleine L'Engle and Robert Jordan last year was a blow, not to mention Norman Mailer.

    MSN had a very depressing little article about deaths in entertainment and culture last year.

    I have a friend who swears Pink Floyd was the original choice to score 2001 but got left out at the last minute. Any truth to this?

    Probably a myth - pure and simple. Though, it does kind of match-up as others have noted.

    A "complete" analysis is made on hollywood intrigue.

    On Wikipedia the official order of events, as they actually unfolded is given.
    Notably, no mention made of Pink Floyd. In fact it was the original composer, North, whose work was deep-sixed and classical recordings used in favor of the same.

    Lastly, I cannot beleive that, as tight-knit as the London scene was at that time, that if:

    Floyd had been approached and refused it would have been rumor rife in the British Music Press, and then when
    Floyd saw the very high profile that the film had among their core audience that
    Floyd wouldn't have run a special screening using their music at appropriate times.

    And they never did.

    It is a great coincidence, but probably nothing more than that.
