    • I don't think we'll pass on another Youboty/Jenkins (STRONG in tackling/run support, great hitter, good cover prospect out of hs) type just because of the numbers. We need depth. It's safe to say that Lane, Underwood, and Amos have underperformed up to this point (though Amos is JUST starting to come through), A.Smith will be graduating this year, and Jenkins is seeming like more and more of a sure thing to leave early for the NFL after the 2007 season if he keeps playing like he's playing.

    Despite us having limited scholarship opportunites next year and already having 2 CB's already verballed, Scott is not a guy you take a "thanks, but no thanks" on. You welcome him with open arms.
     
    I would not place Amos in the same group as Lane and Underwood. Amos is actually progressing quite well given that he is only a redshirt freshman. He's got a lot to work on, but think EJ Underwood. Among Amos, Washington and Coleman, I think we got quite a group of young (I'm talking about freshman eligibility status) of CBs.

    It's arguable, sure. Pre-Bowling Green, it was unarguable that he was underperforming. There were quite a few people expecting Amos to be an instant impact as a back-up CB last year after he single-handedly shut down Mario Manningham during the Ohio North-South Classic, so expectations were pretty high for him even before he put on a S&G jersey. He IS coming around though, albeit slower than Jenkins, Coleman, and Washington, and he did get special mention in my above post that he was just starting to get a hang of things. Our CB's are definetly a "young bunch" (nickname, anyone??), but boy are they talented!

    Agreed about the height, cbf40. I think they'd take Berry first for his versatility as well.

    No one knew a walkon was going to be a very solid starter. Very few had seen film on Washington, who is developing into a stud as well. One game had everyone excited, but is far from enough to declare Amos an indisputable underperformer.

    Amos should have been in the two-deep by mid-year last year, but Jenkins beat him out and Amos redshirted. Much like Coleman, he has more than enough athletic ability to be a decent backup, but they're going over the fundamentals of CB with him to better utilize his athletic ability. He blanked Manningham in the 2nd half of the North South Classic. Manningham's now the lead receiver at scUM (beating out Breaston) and is a superstar in the making. Amos is stuck in the two deep behind 3 better CB's, all of which weren't as highly touted as Amos in high school. Now tell me which one has underperformed thus far.

    I've heard through the grapevine that the staff was concerned about how our CB's have progressed (pre-season), and Amos was one name that was mentioned (I wouldn't have mentioned his name otherwise). I mean, prove me wrong here y'all! I'll listen with an open mind

    Fans have a tendency to get caught up with hype surrounding young players. It wasn't long ago that Albert Dukes was our best route runner and that Jimmie Cordle was our best center. It's the same situation when Jenkins was getting major pt last season and fans were clamoring that Amos was the better DB. That is not to say that Amos is not a good DB. I have no doubt that he has all the athletic skills for him to succeed here and that he is getting a lot of good coaching. His light hasn't exactly turned on, but he is playing very good ball right now. The way I honestly look at it, you are going to have:

    *Malcolm Jenkins playing three seasons at OSU and becoming a 1st round pick.
    *Washington taking over Smith's spot next season and start for OSU for three years.
    *Amos taking over for Jenkins in 2008 and starting for two years at OSU. (would have to beat strong competition from Coleman)
    *Russell starting four years (possibly three) at OSU and becoming the next Donte Whitner.
    *O'Neil starting for three years at OSU.

    Not too bad for one class, huh?

    im not entirely certain jenkins leaves after next season... look at the team as a whole. next season will be a rebuilding year as it were. the year after next... we'll likely be a nc caliber team again. i wouldn't be surprised if none of our current sophmores go early.

    not saying it won't happen. but right now, im thinking its very possible many of these guys will be sticking around.

    Not so fast on next years team...Don't right them off just yet.

    As for Amos underperforming that is just ridiculous. He has a ton of talent and is just behind 2 future All big ten 1st team performers if not AA's.

    I may be wrong, but I thought Amos came in as a WR (in terms of his high ranking) with the potential to play corner if needed. Can we really compare his high WR ranking to the CB/S rankings of Washington, et al?

    I have to disagree with you. With the talent Tressel is recruiting, he have amazing depth. We won't be seeing rebuilding years, at least not in the traditional sense of the word.

    Amos is going to be a star. Watch the last few games and he's all over .

    Next year, lb'ers will be better, secondary will be scary great but, the D-LINE SCARES ME with young talent and the seniors gone.
    Pitcock will be missed like heck and the 3 other seniors. They're the ones making the defense tough this season.

    I agree with your premise...however, IMHO, the perception of rebuiling or reloading will depend on the performance of the new QB.
