Are Giant Monster Movies Ever Scary?

I have this opinion that monster movies based on giant monsters are never scary. Including the latest, Cloverfield.
(I won't waste my time seeing it at the movies.)
Thoughts?

well, I need to rehash a photoshop I did a couple years ago

I didn't think Cloverfield was scary, either, but I don't think it was really trying to be scary. I enjoyed the hell out of it though.

I pretty much hate all monster movies, though. I find most of them lame and very uninteresting. Forced scaring is never good.

I don't find any monster movies scary either. Those and any sort of fantasy/sci-fi/make-believe "scary" movies. They just aren't believable and I won't be shivering in bed thinking about some giant bug or haunted tooth fairy.

Give me a thriller about something realistic that could really happen... like a crazy serial killer.

I thought cloverfield definitely had it's scaryness to it. Mainly because of the 1st person point of view. Didnt have a bunch of overdone camera angles and music, etc. Was very impressed with it actually. Those that didnt like it, probably liked the american Godzilla, which was the biggest pile of shit aside from Sky Captain and the 3 hours I'll never get back.
