Are Crosby and Ovechkin the NHL's Bird and Magic?

Crosby and Ovechkin can be the greatest players ever and until the NHL gets back on to a major network no one will know or care. Hockey is a lot more exciting this year since the rule changes but it came a little too late. Now no one sees it.

Ovechkin is more of a Dominque Wilkins: he can put the puck in the net, but does he make the other players around him better? I'm not so sure he does. He certainly is a great goal scorer though, and plays a nice physical game.

Crosby, on the other hand, has made all the players around him better. His passes are reminiscent of Lemieux's in his prime. He's not nearly as big as A.O. , but more often than not, he comes away with the puck when fighting for it along the boards. The thing I really like about him is his back hand passsing, it's amazing. He's probably drawn 25 penalties so far from the opposition. He'll develop into a great defender and will see additional time with the pk unit. He aure loves to knock off the 'ole water bottle , too.

Yeah hopefully he is on it this year. With the number of young stars coming out of Canada and the young talent the US is producing (Kessel, Praise, Whitney, Montoya, etc...) I think we could have a return to the hockey rivalry our countries had in the mid to late 90s.

Somehow, "Ovechkin" isn't a name that slides off your tounge like "Bird" or "Magic". These types of rivalries only gain real steam when they transcend the sport and begin to bring in the casual fan, who is generally quite stupid. I know it sounds stupid, but the NHL would have a better chance if it was Crosby vs Nash, or Stills vs Young (the second example was a poor joke). Mainstream America rarely buys into players with the last name "Ovechkin".

This rivalry will be the talk of Hockey fans for years, but my uncle, dad or brother will never hear of it.

The Penguins have nobody that can put the puck in the net for him. Crosby is the offense. He leads the team in goals and assists. Palffy retired. Leclair and Gonchar are disappointments. Everbody else but maybe Recchi and Malone are 4th line players. The defense is soft and has no heart.

nash is in the west, crosby in the east. the way the current system is set up they will face each other less than once a year, minus the stanley cup finals possibility. the whole realignment is a huge topic of debate right now for nhl fans. most feel columbus or the wings iwll end up in the east. these are the only eastern time zone teams in the west. but most have columbus in a new central with colorado, st louis, dallas and nashville. with the parity of hockey it is a lot more rare for teams to have the success of the lakers/celtics of the bird magic era.

i havent seen the pens enough to comment on them to much, they get a lot of national tv coverage but i dont want to watch that crap. did they make some bad offseason decisions yes. but keep in mind they still have malkin over in the russian super league. he is one helluva player.

Oullet has played well on the Crosby line. Other than that, most of the team seems to have given up. Well, I shouldn't say that but most of the verterans have. The rookies all seem to play hard.

Malkin will be a WELCOME addition next year.

I just hope this offseason can produce a blueliner that can play in his own end.

Malkin may not be able to play in the NHL next year. He currently has another year left on his contract with his Russian team and considering the NHL doesn't have a deal with the Russian Hockey Federation yet he could be forced to play another year in Russia before he comes over. Hopefully this doesn't happen but it is very possible that it does.

You're right. The problem is that by the time Malkin makes it to the NHL, the Pens will be playing in (insert city here), thanks to that fat ass piece of shit Ed Rendell. He needs to
take a frigid dip in the Skuykill.
