The screw up in the LPGA event wasn't that the rule was archaic but rather the way they went about deciding and then informing the player...
How many other players that week maybe did the same thing but maybe were fortunate to not be on TV?

She literally moved less than 10 grains of sand.

And they wonder why people are fleeing golf.

You're right about it sucking to just happen to be on TV, and with some clown micro-zooming in to your club head, at that very time. But, rules are rules. If she didn't get the penalty, then "how many grains of sand" would constitute "grounding you club"? Way back when I played the game (poorly I might add), whenever I was in the trap I was anal about not letting my club near the sand when addressing the ball, and all my playing companions were the same.

Think of it this way: Say an opposing player runs down the sidelines for a TD against us, and the replay showed he just barely grazed the sideline by a blade or two of grass/turf. Would you complain about the TD being overturned on replay? Probably not, and if any opposing fan nearly complained about it you'd probably tell him to shut the fuck up...I would.

You bring up good points.

My only counterargument is that in golf, players officiate and penalize themselves.

In football, a third party is in charge of calling such penalties.

Bump for USGA's recent screwups.

The Dustin Johnson fiasco has actually helped lower my scores.

In their apology the USGA said that they needed to "take a mulligan" on the way they handled the issue.

It took some convincing with my golf buddies, but I am now taking full advantage of these new USGA sanctioned mulligans.
