Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

rocketman

flying low
Considering gettin a 12" Powerbook. Anyone have any problems with em? I'm tired of using a desktop and I'm tired of using Windows. After messing with my friends Powerbook, I was amazed at how snappy the OS was and how well put together they are, as well as how easy it is to use. I'm thinkin maybe sometime in April or May I'd be gettin a laptop.

It is like going from a Ford to a BMW- you may never look back. I've had them (macs that is) and really like them. The only cause for Win32 in my life is to make it easier to mesh with work - all Windows there. If I were doing anything demanding creativity on a non-numerical level Mac/Apple is the way I would go. Much more human-centric machinery - not even a close contest.

Apple unveils software to permit Windows use

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news), the maker of the Macintosh computer and iPod music device, on Wednesday rolled out a first-ever software patch to run Microsoft's dominant Windows operating system on its PCs, a move that could draw millions of new buyers.

By enabling the move to Windows, the world's No. 1 operating system, Apple hopes to draw people who want Macs, considered by many as easier to use and more stylish, but prefer the Windows operating system.

Apple shares rose 5.7 percent in early trade on Nasdaq.

Apple said the "Boot Camp" software, available immediately as a download, enables Macs powered by Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) chips to run either Windows XP or Apple's Mac OS operating system software.

Apple's rivals Dell Inc. (Nasdaq:biggrin:ELL - news) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - news) primarily use Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Windows software.

"We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement."

In addition, with the patch, Macintosh users will now likely be able to run some games and other software on their Mac OS X computers without buying a separate Windows based computer.

The final version of Boot Camp will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5 "Leopard" personal computer. Apple said it will not provide support for installing or running Boot Camp and does not sell or support Microsoft Windows software.

Cupertino, California-based Apple said last June it would shift to microprocessors made by Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker, from those made by International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news). It plans to move its entire Macintosh line to Intel chips by the end of 2007.

The stock was up $3.48 to $64.65 on Nasdaq.

I'm sure some will welcome this.
Though, if you bought a Mac, aren't you essentially buying into the value of the MacOS as a higher and better technology than anything out of MSofts hands?

Apple's Safari Browser Beta for Windows

Apple's Safaris Browser is now available in a beta form for Windows

Aside from tabbed browsing and Private Browsing (Firefox has those equivalents - now also does IE) Safari has a feature that allows you to re-size a text field on the fly, plus a more comprehensive form of inline find for text strings.

This release is purportedly to help support iPhone app deployment.

Yeah, when I heard this I didn't know what to think. As a Mac user, there is no one consensus browser that all OS X people use and say "This is the best and you're retarded if you don't use it" (like with Firefox in Windows).

Firefox for OS X works just like it does on Windows, but its bloated and doesn't take advantage of OS X's user interface. Camino is Firefox for Mac but it's so stripped down it doesn't have any functionality. Safari is the fastest (especially the Safari 3 beta I'm running in OS X) but not extensible.

I'm glad they fixed my biggest pet-peave and added in-line search, but for forums like BP, they still haven't added java support for text editing. So if I want to make something bold in the quick reply box, it gives me the brackets around everything instead of a preview as to how it will look. Very annoying if you have a lot of formatting to do in a post.

IMO, Windows users don't really have any compelling reason to try out Safari. FWIW, I use all three, but Safari the most cause its fast. I suppose the only good thing is now Windows-based web developers can check and see how Safari renders their sites without having to get a Mac.
