allegedly it seems a new iphone 5 will be out this year? any rumblings? any guesses on time frames? i was considering upgrading to i4, but if i5 is out mid-late summer i may consider waiting.

I'd hold off, 'specially if you have a 3Gs now. I upgraded my 3G as a preorder for the 4 and honestly... meh... kinda miss the 3G form factor. Had I had my wife's 3Gs there'd been no way I would have bothered with the upgrade.

Just my $.02.

On Verizon as well as AT&T? Or just in general?

I'd be willing to bet that the Verizon & AT&T models will be announced/released on the same date going forward, and will pretty much be the same phone except the cellular radio components. That would fit Apple's M.O., anyway.

I'm a 3GS owner - I bought mine about right before the iPhone 4 came out. There is little about the iPhone 4 that I found compelling. There's a much bigger performance & feature gap from the 3g to the 4 though. I'm anticipating a similar gap between the 3GS and iPhone 5 and will probably be upgrading when the new one comes out.

i still have a regular 3g. not sure when i got it, late summer/early fallish of 2008? i wasnt in the first pack of people but not long after. i just cant justify dropping $200 or 400 or whatever every year or 18 months on a phone. but i know that the phone is no longer supported via software upgrade, etc. physically its still in very good shape, so i may just push it along until it dies/i have trouble/i5 is released.

I'm the same. Nothing about the iphone4 is really compelling to me. I got my 3Gs in May before the 4 announcement. I'm glad I didn't wait.

That is pretty freaking awesome. How would you type though? By only holding the keyboard? If so it's gotta be kind of heavy duty so it doesn't snap off. Very cool concept. I may look into that.

Loyal AT&T iPhone customer? AT&T wants to say thank you to iPhone owners by sending you 1000 free rollover minutes. All you have to do is text.

We first heard about this free 1000 minutes deal earlier today but declined to post because we weren't sure that AT&T really was offering it to all customers. We sent an e-mail to AT&T PR and never heard back, but since 9to5Mac claims that AT&T has confirmed this is legitimate for all customers, here's the details of how to claim your minutes.

Hop in to your SMS app, and send off the message YES to 11113020 by March 31, 2011. Your account will be credited with 1000 bonus rollover minutes -- although it can take up to four weeks to process the offer. Enjoy!

Just tried it, they txted me back that I should get the 1,000 minutes in a few weeks.

8Gb 3GS iPhones are currently $49 at AT&T stores. I went in today to upgrade from my 3G (since I missed out on the iPhone 4 promo at Christmas as everybody sold out within hours), and I have to say the 3GS speed blows the 3G out of the water. Launching apps and playing games is like night and day. The Web browser on the 3GS loads pages about as fast as my desktop computer, where the old 3G iPhone took a little while to think about how to render a table. Huge difference!

Best cellphone upgrade I've ever signed on for for $49.

And if you haven't checked lately, if you already have a minute plan > 700 with unlimited text, they'll upgrade you to unlimited text, data, and mobile-to-any network mobile for free.

T-Mobile customers will probably want to hang themselves. I can't imagine this will add any tangible benefits for existing AT&T customers either. I'm a happy a happy AT&T customer, but I'm against this move. It's not like Verizon acquiring Alltel where they were able to increase their coverage footprint in the mid-south and Appalachia. To me it looks like a market share grab and the next step in the re-constitution of Ma Bell. (Yes, I'm aware T-Mobile is German-held and not a part of the original AT&T monopoly.) Next is for Sprint to be absorbed by Verizon, and before we know it AT&T and Verizon will come together under some unified next-gen technology.

This gets to why I was against the Sirius-XM merger a while back. The only two satellite radio providers in North America argued that they somehow weren't forming a monopoly, and the regulators bought it. When the mobile telecoms merge they'll make a similar argument - that their real competition is not amongst themselves, but from Skype, Google Voice, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, etc.

I'm happy with AT&T right now. I don't want to change. However, I want to have options should I change my mind.
