Man I hope it comes out in September. My 4 is in tatters--the screen is shattered in a couple corners from where I dropped it a couple times. I refuse to purchase another 4, since the 5 should be out shortly.

I hope Apple is smart enough to make 30-to-19 pin adapters.

its apple... why sell an adapter that you can only buy one of for $20 when they can get you to buy 5 cables that are $15 a piece. Apple changes connections to make more money from the consumer and from those who license the design of that connector to make their stuff work...

Btw, there won't be an iPhone 5. It will be called the new iPhone.

This naming crap is posted all over iPhone forums. (which I still haven't decided to stick to apple or switch to android)

Nevermind that the 30-pin connection has been in use for about a decade now.

Name another major product line that has stuck with a proprietary connection for that long.

As somebody who has bought heavily into 30-pin accessories, I have every reason to be upset with this change. It makes sense though. 11 of the 30 pins support legacy technology (FireWire, composite ans S-video) that neither consumers nor 3rd party manufacturers are utilizing. Reducing to 19 pins will allow Apple to save space in their devices that can be used to include new components or make devices more compact.

Yes, I'm sure that licensing this proprietary connection is lucrative business. It's not without benefits for consumers though. Apple's dock connector has advantages over USB in that it does not require drivers to get an iPod and a set of speakers (for instance) to work together. It has allowed for a wide variety of high-quality, purpose-built accessories that simply would not exist without it, and do not exist to the same extent for other competing devices.

The change might be painful for some people who have bought in - as is the case any time a once-popular legacy format is phased out. I'm there we're some people out there who were pissed off when floppy disk drives were no longer being included on new computers. That doesn't mean that the decision to exclude it was made capriciously or that it wasn't worthwhile.

It's a wise idea if they do it.

First of all, the number convention looks more and more ridiculous the higher they go. UFC would be smart to realize that as well.

Second of all, it would prevent the PR problem they had with the 4S where an expectant public was referring to it as the iPhone 5 before it was announced.
