4G is the next generation in cell phone networks.

Sprint claims to have 4G right now via WiMax technology, but it's really more of an enhanced 3G technology. They'll probably join the LTE bandwagon.

Verizon & ATT are both using LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology for their 4G networks. Currently they use CDMA & GSM technology, which means one network's phone can't be taken to the other network (verizon to att or vice versa). In theory, this should be changing with 4G LTE technology on both.

Verizon is rolling out 4G networks in 2010 in select areas but will be more nationwide in 2011. ATT is planning a 2011 deployment.

No official details - or even useful rumors - about when the iPhone 4G might be announced. 2010 would follow their basic timeline for past iphones, but it doesn't appear to have a 4G network ready for it this summer.

The next iPhone is very unlikely to come to Verizon, though there are rumors of another apple phone that could come to big red.

Interesting. My Verizon BB Tour is currently being used as a tethered modem - in GSM mode on a MacBook Pro. It works great as a modem under that setup (about 1 Mbps download), but fails completely when I try to use it in CDMA mode.

The dual-mode personality of this phone makes for all kinds of interesting findings.

It looks like you can buy an iphone out of contract through apple now. If only AT&T didn't force you to get a data plan with smart phones. This would also make more sense if carriers other than AT&T and T-Mobile(any others) could use this device.

According to Apple's internal documentation, the iPhone is now available without AT&T contract or ID at any Apple Store. Our contact claims that the iPhone is locked, however, so it will only work with AT&T SIMs. Here are the conditions:

? Customers are not required to have an AT&T contract.
? Customers can only purchase one iPhone per day.

Is that easy. Then it's up to you to unlock it. The price is $499 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, $599 for the iPhone 3GS 16GB, and $699 for the 32GB top model.

iPhone OS 4.0 rumor roundup ? Boy Genius Report

Multitasking

The most persistent rumor, which also happens to be the one most dear to people’s hearts, is that multitasking for third-party applications will finally come to the iPhone. As it currently stands, only stock apps like iPod, Mail, Messages, Phone and Safari have supported the feature. Newer rumors even have the new OS having an Expos?-like feature which would make it significantly easier for users to switch between applications on the fly.

Global Inbox

Another rumor would finally see the Mail app gain the option for a global mailbox. From the beginning, the iPhone OS has supported multiple mailboxes but required users to individually check each inbox instead of offering a way to view new email from all active accounts in one fell swoop.

Homescreen Contacts

Spotted in age old patents, it is believed Apple will make it possible to add contacts to the home screen. This would essentially enable users to create pseudo applications that do nothing but make it much faster to get in contact with individuals by phone, text, email, IM and so on.

iAd

Previously rumored to be unveiled today, it is now expected that Apple’s “iAd” service will be introduced tomorrow. Born out of Apple’s acquisition of Quattro Wireless, the advertising service is expected to not only allow Apple to further distance itself from smartphone rival Google but also allow for closer ties with developers who will presumably be given the Apple-typical 70% of revenue. The irony? Google stands to benefit from this as the increased competition might finally force the FTC to push through Google’s purchase of AdMob.

OS-wide Multi-Touch

Not much needs to be said about this, but we don’t think there’s such a thing as too much Multi-Touch.

Enhanced Calendar and Address Book sync

This is another one from our Apple connects, although we have to admit we weren’t able to get them to elaborate any further. But that’s okay. We love surprises.

Reworked UI

We’re not saying we’re going to see an entirely fresh design, but there’s a lot of things Apple could improve on in the graphics department. Expect to see a lot of iPad design elements, and even some new ones.

Direct Printing

Finally we have the newest rumor of the bunch, and it has to do with OS 4.0 supporting direct printing. This one is somewhat out there, but the fact that “printing directly from iPad is not currently available” (emphasis ours) is listed in support documents for the iPad version of the iWork apps. Can you imagine how nice it would be to be able to print your documents straight from your iPhone over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

So... since according to Apple, Android is a clone of the iPhone, does them stealing some the key features of Android and integrating them make it all good? Or are we going to wait 2 weeks and have Apple take google to court after they patent all this? Multitasking, Bluetooth printing, custom UI, Shortcuts to contacts on the home screen, ad supported applications, synced contacts and calendar, those features all sound pretty familiar to me :)

Queue the apple fanboi bashing in 5... 4...

Those sound like catch-up "additions", like copy & paste or video recording. I'm delaying my year old upgrade to see what greatness Apple has in store for this summer, but if Verizon gets an HD2 like device, they will finally have an iPhone beater (no one will kill it, but they are passing it).

With as fast as Android is catching up, and guys like Cyanogen being able to actually re-write the core OS, Apple has true competition to the iPhone. I have read rumors about a replaceable battery as well, these are things people have cried for but have fallen on deaf ears.

Now, there's an alternative, and a great one at that, so Smug Jobs has to listen and actually give their customers what they want, which one would think would give the Apple fans something to be joyous about. Instead, it's just turned into whines, complaints, lawsuits, and general bashing.

I love the internet :)
