Apocalypto-- Mel Gibson Director

I have lost all respect for the two of them, but why should that effect your enjoyment of movies?

Eh, probably b/c he (and many others) don't wish to spend money on movies directed by a scumbag. Gibson has proven himself to be an excellent director, but I'll never pay to see one of his movies b/c he's an anti-Semite. It's kind of the same way I feel about Roman Polanski...the dude is a superb director, but he's a piece of human waste who doesn't deserve my patronage.

I tend to avoid movies whose trailers feature explosions, chases and assorted violence. So, no, I haven't seen Apoca... nor did I see The Passion. Did see Braveheart and The Patriot, which in my opinion was Braveheart set in colonial Williamsburg. It's a critique of Gibson's films that I've heard, and based upon my two exposures, seems accurate. Having said that I will say that Mad Mel does what he does quite well, it just ain't my cup of tea.

We saw it this weekend and we both enjoyed it very much.

Sure there is the suspension of disbelief element, and yes it was brutal. But like the Godfather films, the violence and gore have a purpose.

With that being said I can see why people who disagree with his personal issues do not want to patronize his films.

If his anti semitism offends you deeply, why put money in his pocket. And the money does go to Mel.

Just as there are pro choicers who refuse to shop at Walmart etc.... because the money ends up supporting a cause they oppose.
