face it, the media loves scUM and they always seem to start higher than they finish. Name the last year they didn't have 3+ losses? Sure hasn't been in the last four years. Have no fear, they will drop as always
Yup, we're overrated. The top football schools are always overrated because there's always some schools that surprise everyone. We're not the worst offenders by far in the overrated category (Texas A&M and Notre Dame are much worse). For a statistical analysis of this idea, look here:

Thats a good point. And with the way that some of the media was drooling over Hart and Henne, and the fact that they were both freshmen, I'm a little surprised that they're ONLY #4. Has Henne EVER made a mistake, in the eyes of the media, or is he Tom Brady, reincarnate? And the way the announcers praise Hart for scoring from 2 yards out is disgusting. Braylon Edwards, the greatest athlete since Johnny Unitas, in their opinion, is gone, but either Breaston or Avant will soon fill the void. But that's off-topic, I guess.

I really don't think I care much about rankings. I'm curious and I find myself checking the rankings whenever I see that they're out, and it's interesting to see what kind of opinions the rest of the country has about different teams, but I don't think I'm any less excited with a 20+ ranking than I am with a top-5 ranking. It's all about some self-appointed "experts" who claims to know everything about college football. And many of them are the same guys who picked Miami to beat Ohio State by 2 touchdowns.

Louisville was a dropped interception in the numbers away from beating Miami and going undefeated last year. They're very good and bring back a lot. I wouldn't be surprised to see them run the table this year. #1 may be a stretch right now but I wouldn't have a problem with them being in the top 5.

Thanks for the link. Off topic, but through that site I stumbled across a link to this fine quote from Gary Moeller:

“Ginn reminds me of Bo Jackson, Moeller said. “If you’re on defense, you don’t want him getting to the sidelines. You’ll have a hard time catching him.

Nice article TheMile. Perhaps it seems to many OSU fans that Michigan is overrated so often because we tend to be that much more underrated (3.1 above original predictions)

If we don't win big against Miami I'd say we will drop to 7th after the first week. Oklahoma is only one point behind us and they'll probably paste whichever divII school they play that week. Thats all fine by me. After week two is when we see where we really stand.

Looks like you were a little off with this prediction. :)

But do you guys think there will be any movement in the top 6. I think Tenn. should drop down to 6 and everyone else should move up a spot.

I agree on your Tennessee statement. I also think we looked a thousand times better than scUM based on defense alone, but do I think we'll surpass them...No. Maybe Tenn. moves down, but that would be it IMO.

I don't think we will move ahead of scUM just b/c they defeated NIU by a fair margin so they are not going to move. I don't like the fact they won't change the rankings more drastically after the first week, b/c the first rankings are merely prediction. Now they see what teams have.

I don't care whether the guy was honest with himself or not, it's a foolish rationale on which to rank teams in the preseason, in my opinion.

Imagine if a lot of the pollees thought this way and Louisville was preseason #2 behind USC. Imagine further that USC, Louisville, and Ohio State all go undefeated. Should Louisville get the nod for the championship game over Ohio State, precisely because Louisville had the easier schedule (and yeah, I know the AP is no longer part of the BCS, but you could apply this thinking to any poll).

Teams that play weak schedules get rewarded enough for that during the season. This guy's thinking gives them even more reward for weak schedules before the season even starts.

Good points.
And the AP crowns a "champion" whether or not they agree with the BCS. That's the only reason USC is referred to as "back-to-back champions" - the AP's anti-BCS tantrum 2 years ago.

If this voter's rationale is the kind of thinking that goes into the AP poll, it brings the AP's "champion" even more into question.

I am amazed or maybe just highly amused...

Did ANYONE that saw any of the Tenn game, think that was the #3 in the land?

Okla was just beaten by TCU... TCU !?!?!!?! and stays in the TOP 10 !!!!!

Louisville has a #1 vote... very good team... but what are you smoking?

Pitt gets pounded by ND and still gets ranked anything?!?!

Boise State looked like a mediocre Div II

Purdue ranking is obviously just being influenced by their upcoming powerhouse matchup with my Akron Zips... OK, so I took a liberty... I can be amusing too...

Hey NJ they havent put the new rankings out the rankings on the first page are the preseason rankings. :)
