Most slaughterhouses use a tool called a bolt gun to terminate their livestock. It is held to the animal's forehead (as demonstrated below on a horsey), the trigger is pulled, and an eight-inch steel bold fires and retracts, killing the animal instantly. Proper use of the bolt gun is very humane, but totally ruins any potential trophies.

ive always wondered if the people who come up with this stuff have actually been on a farm? seen real live cattle? like... before it goes to krogers? i suppose giving the cow an abortion would be better? perhaps just killing the calf outright directly after birth and tossing the dead carcase to the buzzards is a better alternative than using the animal for a viable food product? there is a reason why milk can be made available 24/7 365 at affordable prices...

The calves are generally fed a milk substitute

THOSE BASTARDS!!!! oh no wait... their.. calves.. calves drink.. milk... *ponders*

Others are raised in "open pens," a kind of minimum security prison

.... you mean like ALL cattle? or for that manner... ALL domesticated animals? how many people here let their animals run free with nothing to impede them? show of hands please... anyone? thats what i thought.

calves are susceptible to a long list of diseases

pneumonia and diarrhea are diseases? if thats the case white castle has got to be the single largest cause of "disease" known to man! maybe white castle "meat" is made of veal... *shrug* i thought it was kangaroo meat...

Consequently, they must be given massive doses of antibiotics and other drugs just to keep them alive

yeah, cause antibiotics are so fucking cheap! anyone here ever buy ANY type of antibiotic without an insurance card? what did it cost you? a nickle or something for a bottle of 100 right? *snickers*

The calves often suffer from wounds caused by the constant rubbing against the crates.

just like all cattle "suffer" from horrid wounds from constantly ITCHING themselves on barbwire fences!

The quality of this "food," laden with chemicals

:slappy: hows that genetically engineered corn taste?

yet have been sentenced to a fate comparable to any Nazi concentration camp

ah yes, farmers being compaired to hitler... yes... this MUST be a reliable and 100% unbiased source of information. are veal calves treated like household pets? nope, primarily cause they are food. they were born to be food and thus, live the life of something destined to be sacrificed for the betterment of another. while not the most envious of lives, most farmers don't get into it for the "big bucks". these farmers take as much, if not more, pride in the animals and produce they put forth than anyone in any other business. you kind of have to in order to stick with it. insanely early mornings, late nights, and next to no financial reward. outside of working with the animals and the land, there are few up sides to farming.

as far as the whole "painful deaths" bit. name a way to die that isn't painful to some degree. you are dieing after all... its not supposed to be fun.

on a side note, i never cared much for veal and don't eat it often. has nothing to do with how the animals are treated though.
