Any tips/information for heading to Michigan State?

I'm visiting MSU in a few weeks to check out their PhD program in fisheries and wildlife. Anyone have any tips, recommendations for visiting the area? I've never been. For those that have been, is it a fun area? Apart from the academic side of things, I need some bars/social areas and outdoor activities. Florida has been good to me for fishing but not as much for hiking or backpacking. Don't know if MSU offers high-quality outdoor activities or not.

Any info appreciated.
 
I used to go up there for business a couple of times a year. You can find something to do but not too much. The bar scene is good if you're still young enough to hang out with students. The restaurant scene is pretty lacking.

Put it this way, I have a friend who clerked for a Michigan Supreme Court Justice after law school. He had never lived in Michigan before taking the job and chose to live in Ann Arbor and commute to E. Lansing. There's really no comparison between the two if you're older than 25.

That's a bit of what I'm afraid of in terms of what to do. I'm worried it's a bit of a redneck town, despite being a university town. While the fisheries and wildlife department is top-notch (it's rated as one of the best in the country), I still gotta live there for 4-6 years for work. In terms of bar scene, I can still get away with hanging out with a younger crowd but too often get fed up with the frat/sorority crowd that accompanies college bars.

But I'll be up there to visit for a reason. Any bars that you enjoyed in particular?

I never did the Sparty bars, as I was in my early thirties by then. Sparty chicks are hot....probably the best in the Big Ten, so if you're still in that age range! The company that I worked with was in EL, but I rarely stayed there. I'd usually get a hotel in AA or Southfield (Detroit suburb).

pike muskie are big at the right time of year yes. St Johns (very close) has a few great lakes. #8 golf course in the state very close ass well.

gotta get close to Erie or Michigan for Salmon and trout

I should be able to get on L. Erie quite a bit. The project I'm interviewing for is a walleye project on the offshore reefs and tributaries along western Lake Erie. Collaborating with Ohio DNR, USGS, Michigan State, and Ohio State folks. I've never caught a walleye before, but apparently they think I'm a good candidate to do the work. I'm very interested in getting into some pike fishing... I've heard muskie are 1,000 cast beasts. Growing up in Ohio, I only fished for smallies and sunfish along the banks of some ponds and small lakes.
