Another possibility for fullback

I hate watching 4th and short. We come up short way to often. I would think that there are certain cases where we could line up somebody special in the fullback position and let them block. TE - possible, but the position is thin and usually in these situations we have two TE in the game already. OL - possible, but these guys are kind of slow and we want to hit the hole fast. DL - possible. LB - ideal. Think about it. In Tressleball it is another "Big Speed" position. You invert their role and let them shoot the gaps for the offense. I wouldn't want expect a LB to pass block, run routes or god forgive take a handoff but I can't think of another person on the team I would who's lead block I would rather follow. I would take our LB's, with a head of steam, to blow away any opponents LB that might be loitering in the hole. I know Katzenmoyer did this a couple of time and there was all sorts of hoopla about 45 being in the backfield again. Just a thought for LB's having a situational role as FB.

I love the idea. It's no different really than the experiment that worked so well at Tressel Labs of having receiver Chris Gamble start covering receivers as a corner.

Why not send a linebacker in to crack a linebacker, when you really need the yard and know full well that the other team will be sending all theirs fullspeed?

Then the next interesting question becomes, which linebacker? AJ, Bobby or D'Animal? I'd use D'Animal. He is a powerful monster and the publicity would be great for him. Kind of like the pub Vrabel got during New England's Super Bowl run.

I'm for it. Back in the day we had the Fourth-and-Otis plays. Now we can try Fourth-and-D'Animal.

I remember in Tressels early games of 2001, we would be looking at the old "T" formation and i think this is something on the same lines that you are proposing. I think that you should send this formation over to Coach Tressel, It sure wouldn't hurt anything.

Carpenter played RB in hs, not sure about D'animal or Hawk...so he has at least some experience, and I'm sure his father could give him some solid advice :)

...of course, IIRC, Carpenter broke his leg junior year playing RB

Edit: I also recall him playing a little TE (his senior year maybe), but I might be crazy on that one

D'Andrea is finally learning LB, lets not throw another assignment at him when he is starting to play great football. Stan White is a perfect fit for the mobile blocking back, I'm not sure why he hasn't seen much PT. I also think that Bobby Carpenter (former RB) or AJ Hawk (very mobile) would be good candidates.

the lb's are way too valuable to risk injury on an offensive play.....i mean why mess up the greatest play an offense has...the punt....

if i were to do it...i would do it with freeman...

DiHard, you have a good point about injuries. After more thought, I am down selecting from a linebacker to Schlegel. If we score on a goal line play, it would force a team to pass instead of run. Either way our LB's are safer.

Kudla is nursing a neck injury so you wouldn't want him in big collisions.

White would make a nice choice for fullback in general but I am thinking about bringing in Schlegel for a pure power, goaline or short yardage situation. In these cases we would want to have White on the field as a second tight end.

Freeman doesn't have the mass as a freshman to dominate as a lead blocker.

Once again I am back to Schlegel and my money is on the Boar Hunter mano a mano against any other LB/Saftey trying to plug the hole.

I read in an OSU player interview recently on another site ...

When talking of this bye week an OSU player was quoted as saying :​

"We're going to do a lot of hitting and the offense is going to go a lot of two tight end, two back and one wide out and we're going to load it up. "​

What that translated into on the field against Northwestern and Then after with Wisconsin , only Tressel knows but we can be ever hopeful. No matter what ...​
