whenever i try and do business with someone i try and spend a few hours to get to know them. today was no different. only an amazing story. this person, who i wont name was a wwII vet. to make it even more interesting he lied about his age at 15 to go fight with his father. at 15.5 he was a pow and spent 3 years of his life as a pow. just amazing to me. a kid at 15 exposed to this. just blew me away. but his only comment was when i said this in the civil war the enlistments were as young as 14, and for the rev war, if you could fire a gun you could fight. just amazing what the generations before us have given us and given up for us...

And thank God for that....

But seriously, that is a pretty gutsy story. While kids did fight during the Civil war, and the Revolutionary war, WWII has got to be a different kind of evil. War is war, and devastating to anyone who goes through it, but being a POW at age 15 in the days of Nazi Germany and the Imperial Japan is insane. Amazing.

Learned in history class. Hitler had kids 11 years old fighting for him. We watched a movie about one of the kids that was a believer of Hitler and his beliefs.

They were called the Hitler Youth and it was an organization which was designed to prepare the young boys in Germany for future military service. When Germany got very desperate as the allies were closing in he put many of these boys into actual armed service as a last resort.

I don't know if anybody else has read Brokaw's book "The Greatest Generation", but it is a great read. We are losing more of these veterans everyday, and what they did for our country is truly amazing. I do as much veteran-related volunteer work as I can with my hectic work schedule, and nothing brings me more joy than meeting and speaking to WWII veterans. One of the proudest moments of my military career was being an usher at the 1999 Memorial Day ceremony at the Maddingly American cemetary in England where I got to meet and speak to numerous WWII veterans. A truly humbling experience.

I've read 3 of Brokaw's books about "The Greatest Generation". All were very worthwhile.
