Alumni - Love to complete my degree, advice needed

I figured that with so many OSU people that someone may be able to help. I've got two years of my degree from OSU while in my lower 20's and I'm looking to complete it. I'm 39 now and don't really NEED my degree, but I want it, because hey... to be a Buckeye alumni is a big deal to me and someday it may turn out that I DO need that degree.

Problem: I live over an hour away from campus and my kid's activities (cheerleading, football, softball, baseball, etc) are on the weekends. I won't take the time away from them to go do the Saturday classes all the way in Columbus. Yes, it's a trade I'm not willing to make (kids for degree from OSU).

I've looked and looked for a satellite campus or alternative way to finish from OSU but can't find one. Does anybody here have any suggestions? If it's just out of the question I'll complete my degree locally or a reputable online school but I'd rather go OSU.

If you took two years of courses at tOSU (whether you completed your degree or not) then you are considered an Alum of THE Ohio State University (and even eligible to join the Alumni Assoc., and recieve full benefits).

Ohio State Alumni: Untitled (see link, question #8)

Obviously getting the degree is completely legit and valuable in and of itself (whether you "need" it or not), but I thought that if you were strictly wanting the honor of considering yourself an Alum of tOSU, then you might be closer that you already think. :wink2:

I myself attended for my Freshman year, transfered out and graduated from a small private school. But I found out years later that because of the # of hours I took, I was considered an Alum (am I using the proper singular form? Alumna, alumni? I wasn't an English Major :tongue2:) and eligible for full benefits as a member of The OSU Alumni Association.

Anyway, don't know if this helps at all. Just an fyi.

Congrats on finishing up. Woody would be proud.

The simplest way would be to talk to the university. An academic advisor there is going know far more than any of us about the details needed to finish up while ensuring that the degree reads "Ohio State Universtity."

That is great information! I'll look into that and take advantage of it but I'd like to go further and if I am to complete my degree, I really want it to be at OSU.

Again, thanks for the link. I'll dive into it late tonight.

Yes. I'll be doing that as well. It's always good to hear from people that may have found a creative way to get it done that an adviser may not think of.

Alumnus. Not a latin major either, eh? :p

Nope.

2 years of High School Spanish (I can sing along fluidly with the song, La Bamba ) and one Quarter of Basic Russian @ tOSU. (why? lots of reasons: in case I decided to become a secret agent...so I could understand the intricasies of one of the Classic movies, "Spies Like Us" with Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase, better...mail order brides...)

I just called OSU and spoke to an adviser. I would have thought they would get this question on occasion but it was new for the person I spoke to. Maybe she's new. She referred me to another lady who was not in. So... I sent her an email. I expect there will be no alternative ways for me to get a degree from OSU.

Maybe I'm being dim about this, but you mention that you are an hour from campus, yet apparently have no branch campus within easy reach. Given that set of particulars I assume you are either in the SE or SW quadrant of the state. Under those circumstances it likely is the case that your best and most practical alternative is to transfer whatever you can transfer to the likes of Ohio U or to UC, Miami or the like.
Earn your degree for what it will give back to you and for any sense of acheivement. Let your selection of college be made based on the needs of your family and professional life. Like Padraig said, with two years under your belt from your twenties you are now and always will be an alumnus of OSU. Your main goal should be to complete the degree path on which you began at Ohio State, no matter where that now takes you.

Agreed, but given the choice I'd rather it be from OSU. If that can't be then I've already decided to go closer. Currently an degree gets me nothing career-wise, I'm already beyond that point. I want it because who knows what will happen in the future (fear of the future) and because hey... I want it.

So, if OSU is ruled out I'll get it from a college here in Dayton, which is about 20 minutes away.
