Looking at OSU’s great walk-on tradition

May 6th, 2016
There has been a long tradition of walk-on players at Ohio State.

OK, the tradition may not be as legendary as Rudy Ruettiger’s story at Notre Dame.

But there have been quite a few walk-ons who have made an impact, either as starters, key backups or even just as scout team players.

On the current team, OSU coach Urban Meyer elevated senior linebackers Craig Fada and Joe Burger to scholarship level for the just-ended spring semester because of everything they have done for the program. (Fada and Burger will only have scholarships in the fall if space is available.)

Today, we will share a look at some of the memorable walk-ons from OSU football over the last 25 years.

NATE EBNER, SAFETY

NIK SARAC, CB

RASHAD FRAZIER, DL

DEVIN BARCLAY, KICKER

A FEW OTHERS:

IIRC, Mike Kne started on the OL one year and he was a walk-on. I would maybe give him honorable mention.
I remember him but unfortunate as it is playing the most important position, I can't say how well he played intelligently. On that note, he may be the best of the group, I just didn't pay attention well enough when he played.

Belongs...
Julian Vann (Lithonia (GA) Parkview; Rivals NR; Scout NR), a walk-on defensive back, is The Man Who Knows No Fear. As we discovered in Tony Gerdeman's Ozone article, Vann claims that he can wrestle a lion and choke a shark, and for those reasons many of his Buckeye teammates (well, at least least two of them) would select Julian as their lone companion in a dark alley fight, even though he tips the scales at a mere 170 pounds. A bigger feat for Julian would be to get some playing time for the Buckeyes, as he has yet to see the field in two seasons.

Apparently Julian has forsaken lion wrestling and shark choking to become an assistant track & field coach at Drake University: LINK

BTW, in 1935, Ohio State beat Drake by the score of 85-7, the 2nd most points and 4th largest margin of victory ever for the Buckeyes.

My case for Andy Groom:
- 3 time Academic All American
- Ended his OSU career as the all-time leader in
punting average at 45.0 yds per punt
- Holds the record for longest punt in a bowl game
at 67 yds.
- Helped win a National Championship 2003 averaging 47.7 yds per punt - 6 punts. Long of 67 yds.
Note: Andy was one of the fastest players on the team!

Tom Klaban
My case for Klaban:
-November 23, 1974
-47 yards, 25 yards, 43 yards, 45 yards
From walk on to legend in 1 Saturday afternoon. Of course, after the game he was no longer a walk on as Woody awarded him a scholarship right after the game.
If the other team has a TD, you can’t really win The Game by only kicking FGs, can you?
