MANSFIELD ? Art Schlichter or Len Dawson?

Robert Smith or Archie Griffin?

Orlando Pace or John Hicks?

Joey Galloway or Cris Carter?

Mike Greene has watched enough football in 30 years as a local on-air sports personality to form an opinion on the best players at each position to ever come out of Ohio. But he?s more interested in what everybody else thinks.

The former WMFD-TV sports director is hosting an hour-long TV show called ?Ohio?s All-Time High School Football Greats? for Fox Sports Ohio. Although air dates have not been determined, the plan is to show it several times on FSO (Channel 31 on the local Time Warner Cable).

Joining Greene on the panel are Steve Blackledge, who has covered high school sports for 25 years at the Columbus Dispatch, and Ron Blackledge (no relation), a former Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts offensive line coach from North Canton. Ron?s son Todd quarterbacked Penn State to a national championship.

Now, for our listless friends...We wax rhapsodically about the great players we have seen in our lifetimes. For those of us that are older, it could be the only advantage we hold: we have seen more of them!

Anyway, it got me to thinking, which got me to assigning. I asked our guys at JJ Huddle a few weeks back to compile an All-Time Ohio High School Football Team. That's right - I am a sadist and couldn't wait to see the arguing and generational gapping and the general backbiting that follows such a project. I am looking forward to your comments below after you read the list below. So look out below:

Is this list intended to be based on high school exploits or subsequent success at the college/nfl level?

if based on High school, at DLine their was a guy that Duane Long had a serious man crush on named Chuck Jones? I believe. who dominated at in HS, signed with OSU but never could get his grades together. Duane used to use this dude as the measuring stick for the DLineman that were to follow. Admittedly, I never saw him play

Big Daddy Wilkinson, might be a DL too of note

duane's bio of chuck

Chuck Jones, DT, Chillicothe - This is the first of a couple of names on this list that you may not recognize. Jones was simply the best defensive line prospect I have ever seen. That includes players I have had the opportunity to see in the last few years from other states. He was perfect. He was 6-4 and 290 and ran 4.9 anytime he was put to a stopwatch. Jones was a freak before we ever started calling these really unique athletes freaks. He dominated the line of scrimmage like no lineman I have seen before or since. He committed to Ohio State early on but due to academic problems, Jones never made it out of Chillicothe High School.

Re: DL Ross Browner, 6-3, 247, Warren Western Reserve, Notre Dame

This comes under the category of "Where are they now".....

Tough break here, diabetes is nothing to mess around with, glad to hear he's doing fairly well now.

Ross Browner had foot amputated

Ross Browner, a star defensive end on Notre Dame's 1973 and 1977 national championship teams, had his left foot amputated in March.

The 59-year-old Warren, Ohio, native and 1999 College Football Hall of Fame inductee developed an ulcer in the foot after he says he was bitten by a brown recluse spider in 2000 while on vacation in the Virgin Islands. This led to multiple infections and 22 operations.

Browner was diagnosed with diabetes in 1994. About 10 to 15 percent of people with that disease can develop a foot ulcer at some point in their lives, according to studies.

"After my last infection in March, my doctor gave me two choices," said Browner, who now resides in Nashville, Tenn. "You can keep your foot, be sick all the time and possibly die, or we can do an amputation and you can have a better quality of life.

"I wanted a better quality life and the chance to be around my wife and my sons. I feel better than I have in a very long time. I was tired of being in and out of the hospital."

Since the operation in March, Browner has been in rehabilitation in Tucson, Ariz., where his son Rylan is a student at Arizona. In late August, the 6-foot-3 Browner was fitted with a size 17 prosthetic foot that he wears without the use of a cane.

On Saturday, Browner, who played 10 years in the NFL, mostly with the Cincinnati Bengals, will be in South Bend for the Notre Dame-Michigan State game to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1973 national championship and undefeated season.
