All-American Football League (Defunct)

New pro league to be built on college football ties

By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY

They come. They go. The World Football League, the USFL, the XFL. Some entrepreneur has a vision ? there's room in a football-obsessed nation for another professional league ? that invariably drowns in red ink and dissolves.

Organizers of the new All American Football League acknowledge the trail of failures. But theirs, they say, is a different approach: pro ball with a college sensibility.

The league takes a first step onto the public stage today and Tuesday, days after the NFL pulled the plug on NFL Europa, when some 400 prospective players try out at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Additional tryouts are planned in September.

Six or eight teams based in Florida, Alabama and other college football hotbeds, pooling graduated talent from nearby colleges and playing mostly by college rules, are scheduled for the AAFL's inaugural spring season next April.

Cont'd ...

Wonder if that poll result page is fixed- meaning, it's showing those schools with which they may be able to gain an agreement?

At any rate, a spelling/grammar lesson would benefit them:

Teams will initially operate as divisions of League whose football operations will be run by a quasi-independent board and General Manager.

The league has signed an agreement with the University of FLORIDA team to play some home games in Gainesville. Orlando's Citrus Bowl or Jacksonville's Gator Bowl or Tampa's Raymond James Stadium is expected to host the remaining home games for
the League's FLORIDA team. The League has also signed option contracts with the Universities of TENNESSE, Purdue and NC State and a letter of intent with the University of Iowa and Florida State University to host League teams. The League has signed a contract with Legion Field to host its ALABAMA team.

The League has signed a contract with Legion Field to host its ALABAMA team.

Still under consideration for '08 are independent sites in MICHIGAN, TEXAS, MISSISSIPPI, ARKANSAS and NEBRASKA.

An announcement of the Leagues' teams for its inaugural season is expected to be made in June, 2007.The League will employ all players
and coaches and will establish a system of allocating talent among the Teams, striving to match players with their alma mater.

Each Team's Advisory Board will have a meaningful role in regard to team operational matters, including the nomination of head coach and the selection of other key employees. Each Team will have a representative on the Council of Team Governors, the body that will propose bylaw and playing rule changes to the League.

The League is now entering into discussions with individuals who are interested in serving on the Advisory Boards of each League team. To learn more about opportunities, click here.

Both are "No Sales". No way would I pay money to go to one of these games or spend time watching on tv. I'm with you when you're playing for the Buckeyes. I'll watch every game possible and make a trip to C-Bus every year or two. I'll follow your progress in the NFL, if you make the league, and read "Where are they now" articles on BP, if you don't. I don't even watch or go to NFL games, though, why in the hell would I watch this league of semi-distinguished gentlemen? I suspect that I'm not alone and if this gets off of the ground, it won't stay aloft for long.

According to this article, they're hoping to get alumni and support groups to buy ownership in the teams. IMO, this has the potential to welcome some NCAA violations with recruits being pitched this:

"Come play for us, and if things don't work out with the NFL, you'll know you'll have a $100,000 a year fallback option playing football for our AAFL team."

Exactly what I was thinking. It is not a good idea for colleges to associate with pro teams.

Although I believe this won't last, I still think it'd be somewhat appealing in Columbus to have a squad of formers made up of mostly Buckeyes. Please tell me you wouldn't want to see Ken Yon Rambo catch a TD pass from Joe Germaine in Ohio Stadium... :paranoid:

We may even be able to pull Demetrius Stanley from those "interesting" Channel 6 dialogues.

This would definitely have more fan appeal than Arena Ball w/ it's goofy rules, etc. As far as the whole competititon thing- Pitt/Steelers, Canes/Dolphins, Huskies/Seahawks- the Buckeyes don't need to worry....

I still think it would work better in the spring. Less competition (HS, CFB, NFL)... and I'd be more interested in watching 2nd tier football than NBA & MLB :sleep1:

The problem I see is that not every franchise would necessarily be in a heavy interest market like a cleveland or pittsburgh, which might require some sort of consolidated financing for the league.
Nothing positive comes from punching back, alpha.
One can only hope.
