High school assistant football coach arrested on drug charges

AKRON, Ohio A longtime high school assistant football coach was arrested on drug charges this week as the team prepares for a state semifinal playoff game.
Police stopped a vehicle Rodney Tatum, 41, an assistant with Akron Buchtel, was driving Monday night because the headlights were not on. The officer searched Tatum's vehicle and found crack cocaine and marijuana, according to a police report.
Tatum was charged with drug abuse and driving with a suspended license. He posted bond Wednesday and did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Akron Public Schools Superintendent Sylvester Small said Tatum was suspended with pay and is not permitted to have contact with students while the district completes an investigation.
Tatum has worked in the school district for 16 years, as an assistant coach and a special education teacher at Central Hower.
Buchtel plays Steubenville on Friday night at Fawcett Stadium in Canton in the Division III state semifinals.

We had a player on our team for about 3 games this year, that transfered down from Garfield, you probably don't know who he was. Well he was a sophmore who ended up co-starting at punt returner for like 2 games for us. He ended up moving back to Akron because of personal reasons, but I never knew before that he had played with Wells. He said he got PT on the varsity as a freshman, so I assume he was playing along side Wells. He said he's coming back next season(this up coming season) to play for us again, so I'll have to ask him what it was like playing with Wells.

unless there were sales to or purchases from minors... is this really newsworthy??
crack and pot.. is that unusual in any metro?

if LeBron went to a public HS, pretty sure it would have been Buchtel..

wish I could remember but I think Rodney Tatum was a sports star in his day..
and MAYBE the same fella who is a pretty skilled Super Middleweight boxer
and he is or was Buchtels girls basketball coach...

grad21, I certainly see and agree with your point about this stuff not being acceptable around kids. However, simpy looking at this on paper (and strictly on paper) this is a guy that I would hope would be given, and take advantage of a 2nd chance. Based on his age, this guy came right out of College to Buchtel, has been ther 16 years. If he's simply a "user" I hope that he gets the help he needs and gets back in the classroon and back on the field real soon.

If he's more than a user, then let Justice run it's proper course.

Oh I agree 100%. My comments were intended for NJ's reference to drugs being common in the metros. Many times, guys who have been through the issues have more to offer the kids. However, he will definitely need to stay clean for an extended period before any school is going to trust him. Also, if he is convicted of a felony, which is a chance here, his career in education is done.

I hear'ya 21. I hope this guy is just a user who can not only take this situation and turn his own life around, but use it as an educational tool to the kids that he teaches. Like Mickey Mantle said, "yea, I'm a role model, DON'T be like me."
