Game Thread Akron at tOSU, Sat. Aug. 31, 3:30pm ET, CBS

81-3. At least thats what the NCAA25 Sim has predicted for us. Sounds legit.

BTW, that game evidently thinks this Buckeye team is the greatest of all time because the sim games are brutal.

After watchig those group videos and the boys out there working, I don't see any way in hell, short of a monsoon, that Akron keeps us under 70 points. Mark May about to have some bad flashbacks

This is the exact score I had in my game against Akron.

81-3 it is. It has been spoken.

Hopefully Mark May shits himself too.

Lightning Round: Ryan Day Calls Jeremiah Smith “Mature Beyond His Years,” Says Brian Hartline Has Been “Unbelievable” On the Field and In Meetings This Preseason

With Ohio State's season opener around the corner, head coach Ryan Day made one of his final media appearances before kickoff against Akron.
  • Day said Ohio State has no "long-term" injuries apart from running back TC Caffey's torn ACL. "There might be a couple (of minor injuries) that we are evaluating toward the end of the week."
  • On what has impressed him about Smith this preseason: "Oh geez. He's been consistent. He's been very workmanlike since he's been here. ... He's shown to be a deep threat down the field. Mature beyond his years. ... Excited to see how he looks on Saturday and the start of his career."
  • On Austin Siereveld stepping into a larger role this preseason: "I think he's an example of somebody who had an opportunity and took it and ran. ... He kind of got thrown into the fire. Because of that, he became a better player for it."
  • On what Ohio State's quarterback run game could look like this season: "If you remember what we did with Justin Fields, it's probably similar to that. ... There's always gonna be a part of the game where Will (Howard) and all of the quarterbacks can impact the game with their feet. ... The quarterbacks can have an effect with their feet in the passing game (also)."
  • On Gee Scott Jr., Jelani Thurman and who will start at tight end for Ohio State: "We are gonna try to roll the tight ends the best we can. ... We've built some depth in their room. ... There will be multiple groupings in the game."
  • Day said Jayden Ballard and Carnell Tate will take kickoffs for Ohio State, while Brandon Inniss and Emeka Egbuka will take punt returns to start the season. Day said the Buckeyes have depth in both spots and could mix different players into the rotation as the season continues.
  • On Ohio State's mindset entering the Akron game: "We have to respect everybody we play against. We have to respect the game. ... These are precious opportunities. ... We have a certain standard we have to play with. We want to come into this game and set the tone for this season. ... Every season is different. This season is what it is, but that doesn't change our approach (entering) the first game."
  • On Egbuka: "I don't think anybody forgot how good a player Emeka Egbuka is." Day said it was "great to see" Egbuka elected captain. He also feels excited to see the senior wide receiver healthy and ready to make an impact in multiple ways for the Buckeyes.
  • When commenting on the chemistry of Ohio State's coaching staff, Day said "Brian Hartline has been unbelievable" while complimenting several individual coaches.

Might have missed it, but would hope the OL gels early on, getting a good push, with Treyveon and Judkins (sp?) each going for 100 - in the first half. D throwing a goose egg, and getting the 2's in early third quarter, and the 3's playing most of fourth quarter. Probably won't happen that way, but maybe with tOSU's senior-laden team, someone may have noticed that there's a bunch of unblooded players that will become the key elements of next and future years that need some gametime reps. Would also imagine that Howard gives way to Brown/Sayin late second quarter, after engineering several good drives leading to TDs. Anyone think that Day will tank a series or two to give this new big-legged punter a chance to kick it out of the Shoe? Go Bucks!

Ohio State Changing Routine Before Home Games by Staying Downtown, Wearing Sweats Rather Than Suits

Ohio State is making a few small changes to its pregame routine before home games this season.

During his first weekly radio show of the season on Thursday, Ryan Day said the Buckeyes will be staying at a hotel downtown on Friday nights this season rather than staying at the Blackwell Inn on campus as they have traditionally. He also revealed that the Buckeyes will wear team-issued sweats to the stadium this year rather than wearing suits as they typically have in recent seasons.

According to an Ohio State spokesperson, Ohio State made the decision to stay downtown so that the team would have more space for pregame walkthroughs. With other public events taking place at the Blackwell before games, Ohio State felt it would be more conducive to the team’s preparation to stay elsewhere.

Ohio State players will still participate in the pregame Skull Session at St. John Arena before walking from St. John Arena to Ohio Stadium approximately two hours before game time.

As for the decision to wear sweatsuits rather than suits and ties, Day said that was a decision made by the team’s leadership with a desire for all players to dress the same before games.

“We wanted everybody to look the same,” Day said. “The leaders felt like that was a good decision, and we all agreed on that. I kind of felt strong about that. So excited about that part of it.”

Day also said that the Buckeyes will be holding both offensive and defensive meetings on Friday nights this season, which they hadn’t done previously.

Other than those changes, however, “everything else is going to be the same,” Day said. The Buckeyes will continue to hold a more relaxed “Best Fridays in Football” practice on Fridays before going over to the Ohio State Golf Club for a team dinner. Aside from the aforementioned meetings, players will have the opportunity to rest on Friday nights before waking up ready to take the field on Saturdays.
