DaytonBuck

I've always liked them
Let's hypothetically I had a flight leaving from Cleveland and the return flight went to Columbus and then there was a connecting flight to Cleveland. What would happen if I just carried my bag on and didn't take the connecting fight to Cleveland?

You would be in Columbus.

Nothing.....the airline in C-Bus would page your name and when you didn't show up give your seat to someone else. However, you would have to find another way to Cleveland if you still wanted to go there at a later time....

I'm in Columbus taking a cheaper flight out of Cleveland. I was warned that I might get some kind of penalty for skipping the connecting flight.

No penalty that I am aware of....you may lose the frequent flyer miles you would have gained on the flights. I travel every week and as long it is on the way home portion (back-end) of the you should have no problems. If it is on the front end the airline will cancel the rest of your flights.....

By the way I just did what you are suggesting....got off in Charlotte even though the rest of the reservation travelled to Fort Lauderdale.....

Airline specific.

ALWAYS read the fine print for cancel/skipped travel/ reschedule issues... these "fees" are now illegal but have been replaced by "fines" and taxes that are more specific... such as in your case "skipping" your second leg. Its another way for an airline to make free money in these horrible times for airliners.

I say call your company and ask a service rep.
